Well first of all having capped skill does help out a lot if you take a hit at the wrong time. The chance of getting interrupted by an exp mob is still pretty high, probably better than 50%, but 50% is better than 90%. So if it isn't capped, I would recommend buying or synthing a stack or two of tsurara, and casting hyoton as often as possible along with keeping Kurayami on which you should already be doing. Once it's capped it's pretty easy to keep capped with normal debuffs and utsusemi.

As far as timing the cast, the trick is to start casting just before the mob hits you. You can't be interrupted by a hit in the first 10% or so of your cast, and most mobs have a delay of exactly four seconds, so if you can time it so you get hit right after you start casting, the next hit will come right after you get shadows up. The timing is very precise, and sometimes it can be hard to do without slow depending on lag conditions, but there is a window where you can force ichi through 100%.

Watch the mobs, learn the rhythm to their attacks, and when shadows drop wait for the next beat before you start your cast instead of trying to recast immediately. Before 37 you may have to take a hit or two while you're waiting on recast, but it takes some pretty bad luck to put you in danger of death in that interval. Another thing to remember is that when mobs double attack, both attacks happen at the same time even if it takes a while for the second one to animate. So even though it shows the mandy or smithy landing its second attack in the middle of your cast, you won't be interrupted so long as the first hit was at the start of your spell.

And at 21, don't sweat it too much. You've probably only tanked for a handful of parties and might not have the timing down yet even if you knew about the trick to begin with. But I see career ninjas in the 40s and 50s freaking out because they can't keep shadows up with such a noob whm or blm or what have you. That's AFTER getting Ni, when you're able to cast one set of shadows under the cover of another. Imo, there's just no excuse for being that bad at your job at that point. If I can tank soldier crawlers at 39 (8-10 level gap) then a reasonably skilled ninja should be able to tackle saner targets without assistance.

Now yes, the game does have a strong emphasis on teamwork and every job can perform leaps and bounds ahead of their normal efficiency with good support from other party members, but if you're completely incapable of playing your job without support then you're just bad at the job.

I just hate it when people use the first three <call>s in general macro. I mean, sure, if someone is AFK or doesn't seem to be paying attemtion <call> 1-3 is an effective means of grabbing that attention back.

But when you do have our attention, please use another <call> that does not include the shrill, unpleasent whistleblower noise. I like the battle drum calls and the "Prelude" themed ones myself. You too can be informative without annoying the hell out of others.

I personally think for some mobs, with slow or not, you can flag one up with timing, but I'm having a very hard time at level 21 getting the timing down. It will usually get to about 90% then I'll get hit and it will get interupted and the closest I can get is that if I can time it so the mob hits on when the timer is around 20%, it has a really good chance of going through, but still about a 35% chance of not finishing. So um is this just something that becomes easier as my ninjutsu skill increases as the levels go up (since most every nin I have pted with in these lower levels usually seems to get interupted frequently)? Or is there a tip you can give, because short of the mob missing, or performing a status/tp move its pretty difficult to squeek one in. (Note: my ninjutsu is around 45 I believe)....So honestly I took alittle offense to that.
lol, i didnt fully read taskmages post before i started posting so i wrote this long spiel about timing for utsusemi and again... taskmage is being tricksies (and correct about timing).

his timer on temporal shift is pretty short considering hes done it twice now in oh... less than a day. :p

id also like to add that full nin tanking doesnt begin until you are able to get haste regularly. 45s and 30s timers are kind of hard to work with.

There is an easy way to fix this. My good friend who is a RDM used <call3> before his weaponskills. He did it so rarely that it would still scare me sometimes. I asked him could he switch it to <call??> (I can't remember which one, but it was one that wasn't a real call). He did it and said he couldn't hear anything. So I typed the call in and said I could here it fine and maybe he needed to turn up his volume. After doing this a few times, both of us using the bogus call, I used <call 3>. A few seconds later he was cussing me out and then I explained to him that he scared the crap out of me every time he did his WS calls. He didn't do it after that.

Same thing with COR or BRD, that set up is a bloody headache because these jobs actively DO NOT position themselves no matter how many times you ask nicely or even bark at them to do so. Any instance where they do is rare.

Also, consider that both BLU and THF get some degree of benefit from subbing THF which means they always have to be running back and forth around the mob. Additionaly, where AoE mobs are concerned, its the duty of the PLD to keep the mages safe by keeping the mob away from there. There's a reason behind the annoyance, but it should be situational. Yet these very jobs act like that situation is always active, especially PLD.

If you're not going to bring juice materials, if you're not going to get sanction refresh or refresh gear and if you're not going to line up for Ballad or Evoker's Roll its simply not worth a COR or BRD's time to deal with you.

I shouldn't have to halfass my buff cycle down to a three buff rotation just to hit you with refresh, its not fair to whatever other melee and mage you invited.

Everyone can be part of the efficacy equation. In all my levels of BLM and even RDM, I packed juice before refresh was at any jobs disposal, if I had a BRD or COR in my PT when I'm BLU, I'm going to keep bringing juice materials and whatever +hMP gear I can use to play it effectively and still get other buffs. Best PLDs I've ever PTed with also do this, hell, they make sure they have Spirit Taker by the proper level too.

DRK is much more low maitenence and easier to deal with, they can just drop by for the occasional Refresh AoE. Sanction Refresh and P Gorget by themselves are almost enough for them.

Being efficient is not RDM, BRD or COR's sole domain, but everyone wants to think they are. Everyone in a PT who can make things flow faster should be willing and able to do so rather than "I just want EXP." If you're not willing to make that effort, why am I spending my time and resources on you? This game isn't a free ride.

It must be nice to have a never ending supply of gill at all times. As a BLU, I will tell you I am up to date with my spells, but in all honosty gear and drinks arn't always available. To say that you will never stay with a party unless all the members have the latest gear is flawed at best. The main problem with having the quotee's attitude is it doesn't take into account a player's ability(remember, you can't judge a book by it's cover-as well as you can't judge someone's ability just because of the gear they are wearing). I am also sick of how people accuse anyone that is not up to the second on there gear as free-loading. The last I knew it takes every member of a party to make it work, not just you. Yes, when I party I want everyone in the party to know what they are doing, but I have no way of knowing that before I watch them in action.(and unless you are psychic, neither do you)

>_>

Did you actually read the stuff you quoted?

BBQ was gripping about people who need Ballad/Evoker's Roll not standing in the right places. (That includes people who can use MP refresh gear, but don't have them and don't stand in the right places--he never said they must have those gear, though it is pretty good idea for many jobs.)

As for juices, the ingredients for them are cheap, and it's cheap to level up to melon juice level. The point BBQ was making, however, is not that everyone must pack juices, but everyone is responsible (to some degree) for his/her own MP recharge--and should not infringe on people needing other buffs from COR or BRD by standing in the wrong places.

The bit about RDM? He means that RDM's cannot work Refresh/Haste miracles if too many people in party want/need those buffs.

Worst thing you can hear is: 'I'm pregnant, you're the father and I'm killing all three of us.' but it doesn't really have exp party implications, unless you're exping at the time it gets said.

Re: Things you don't want to hear when you're invited to a PT.

You know what I love hearing?

"Hey, we're gonna invite you. But there's no WHM, so you're gonna be main healer. And there's no BRD, just our BLM buddy, who instead of helping you Cure is going to spam nukes left and right, as you'll soon find out. On top of that, we're a MNK/NIN, WAR/NIN(who won't Provoke, as you'll see), and a NIN/WAR, all of whom have the best gear in the game but take entirely too long to kill a measly Imp with our 1337 e-peens. Oh, and did I mention? In addition to keeping us alive, you have to Haste all us melees, in addition to Refreshing the lolBLM. And if you fail in all this, it must be your fault, not ours, since we have 1337 gear, CoP completion, HNM shells, and egos the size of Texas."

And another what amuses me, whenever I tell a party that if they don't get a Bard, I'm not main healing:
"Gawd, wut make u think ur so special? Ur such a primadonna lolz. U give rdm bad names."

I can't imagine what makes me such a cynical, hard-headed RDM.

I guess it's better to hear it when you get invited, rather than it not being said but still being true nonetheless.

Well, the first two and a half lines are quoted word word for word. The rest is what I found out in time.
