I dunno why, but I never got even close to the spot. How accurate is that map? I mean, I'd dig in that square of the map, and some of the surrounding ones, but just get a "..." Should I just dig anywhere on the map, or am I just not doing it right?

You have to dig near the ??? on the map. You can look it up after the original display again by looking at the markers, it will be added automatically as a green map marker. The chest isn't directly on the ??? but its close to it.
