Re: gamepad?

PS2 USB adapter is actually $10-$15 if my memory serves me right. I always see them in Radioshack.

Re: gamepad?

one comment for the logitech netplay keyboard/controller.... DON'T

I bought one a while back thinking it'd work well with my PS2, it doesn't. The keyboard is a compact that's been shrunk down even further. It's a big giant pain in the rear to type on. The controller part is sub-standard, and the analog sticks will not centre on release.

As for the best controller pad, there is nothing better than an authentic Sony Dualshock2. There is a reson why everyone try and immitate it with limited success.

I use the PS2 to USB adapter to connect dualshock 2's to my PC's for FFXI. The adapter costs $12 from radioshack

Too much hassle? It really doesn't take much at all to configure a couple of buttons. :-\

Re: gamepad?

It's certainly worth a try if nothing else. Everyone has their own particular way that they are comfortable playing. Whether that is with a Gamepad and a Keyboard, or just with a Keyboard, or (god forbid) just with a Gamepad, no one else is going to be able to tell them what is best.

Except playing without any keyboard at all. That's not a very good idea.

Re: gamepad?

LOL... I remember the VERY first day I played FFXI, PS2 release date, I didn't have a USB keyboard for my PS2. This guy was kind enough to IM me on AIM and talk to me through there, lol.... I went out to get a keyboard that same day. >.<

Re: gamepad?

My wife an I play with a Gamecube Controller. If you've ever used an official GC controller and liked it check out my post here:

Anyway... Everyone else is wrong. What you need to do is get a wired Logitech gamepad, and a Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite 2, and set the keyboard config to Compact mode. Then customize all your key bindings. This setup is pimp and leet and all that good stuff.

You can trust in anyone who can so easily transition into a Strong Bad reference. I'm just saying.

Also, that keyboard is hax. It says so in the title!

Re: gamepad?

The main advantage of that keyboard, other than the delicious key response (and the hax), is that I never ever accidentally hit Caps Lock. Well worth the ridiculous price tag, and never being able to hit F8 on the first try.

Those are tempting advantages indeed. I'm not sure I could ever get used to the setup, but I have to admit, I'd be willing to give it a try. As it is, I really want to get a new keyboard. The one I have came with my PC, and while it's certainly functional, I just hate it irrationally. I'm like that with most things I've owned for more than two years or so though, so that's not saying much.

Re: gamepad?

I don't actually recommend it. I'd hate for my posts here to lead to someone blowing $70 on the thing without trying it first.

The key response is really nice, and I like having Control where it is and such. But if you ever use, say, F keys or Home/End/etc., it's kind of a pain the ass. I can't get used to that little Fn key to access those things at all. The whole advantage of never taking your fingers off the home row is somewhat diminished by having to look down at the keyboard to do anything you'd have to take them off the home row for.

Yeah, especially when the FFXI controller config menu gives you preset control options. All you technically have to do is enable your controller and click a button and its setup. Hassle my foot.
