I personally look at it as how much effect the gear has. In general, a mage's expensive gear will have less effect than a melee's expensive gear. All that ATK/ACC gear on a melee will show up on every swing and every weapon skill. All that MND gear on a RDM is a lot more hard to see. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 07-02-2006, 07:08 AM | #17 (permalink) | | Digital Wizard Super Moderator Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: Florida, USA Posts: 6,018 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 69 Thanked 465x in 306 Posts Gil: 3,086 Bank: 108,404 Total Gil: 111,490 Donate | Re: The most gear dependant job? | Originally Posted by Tirrock | | I've known people take WHM, one of the jobs least effected by "tweaking" their gear and have like 40 different pieces of equipment and multiple macro pallets. I totally agree with Feba's comment. | My WHM gear list has 39 pieces of standard gear (not counting non-essentials like Tavnazian Ring or Reraise Hairpin, or situational things like Anrin Obi), and 2 different macro sets based on whether I'm in an HNM/Dynamis role or more of a standard XP party/enfeebling role.
...and I'm still missing several important pieces of gear (Cleric's Briault, Loquacious Earring, Relaxing Earring, etc.).
As it stands, I'm one of the only WHMs I've seen that can reliably put enemies to Sleep in Dynamis without Elemental Seal (271 Enfeebling Magic + Anrin Obi).

RDM can lvl pretty cheaply if they want to, but there's lots of opportunities to break the bank if you want to be the best. My first thought is that lowish lvl enfeebling earing that I will never buy, for +3 enfeebling that costs a few million gil.
Mages are moderately expensive because you can never get money back for spells you use, but for rdm, the spells are generally inexpensive (I think I was the last NA person to buy refresh back when it was actually expensive). Beyond that, though, most mages can get away with little or no gear and do their job addequately (i.e. aren't a total waste of a pt slot- on my first trip up through the crawler's nest I kept pting with this taru blm who just wore his lvl 1 rse and a wand)
There will always be a blm that has more gear, and more expensive gear, then a ranger he is partying with, somewhere out there, so really there is no Most Gear Dependent job, it's up to the player how effective or uber they want to be. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 07-02-2006, 10:57 AM | #19 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2003 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Posts: 86 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 1,772 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,772 Donate | Re: The most gear dependant job? My 68 Red Mage doesn't have any gear that cost more than 200k, aside from one of my earrings that I got from an NM. I don't expect to pay much more once I'm 72 either, you can buy most errant gear for peanuts it seems.
Thief will be costing me much more, as I'm trying to find a way to deal good damage numbers at a higher level. guh :D | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 07-02-2006, 11:42 AM | #20 (permalink) | | Can't You Read? If you're listing consumables - the most gear dependant jobs are Ninja and Ranger (you can get by with mediocre gear as long as your arrows/tools are abundant).
If you talking about gear... Thief is probably the most expensive jobs in terms of equipment not in terms of expense for the sake of it, but at trying to get damage on par with other melees. A godly geared Thf with 30+ million gear will still be out DD'd by averagely geared Warriors/Ninjas/Dragoons/Dark Knights/Samurai/Rangers and Monks on neutral mobs (but not by as much as if they were equally geared).
In terms of cost of most expensive gear? I'd probably look at Warriors or Ninja for their top end stuff... although I could be wrong - I don't tend to worry about things that far ahead of me. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 07-02-2006, 09:08 PM | #21 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: May 2006 Posts: 491 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post Gil: 7,150 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 7,150 Donate | Re: The most gear dependant job? | Originally Posted by McBride | My 68 Red Mage doesn't have any gear that cost more than 200k, aside from one of my earrings that I got from an NM. Thief will be costing me much more, as I'm trying to find a way to deal good damage numbers at a higher level. | I bought both the marine M gloves and the enfeebling torque by lvl 68 on my rdm. I got them before the inflation, but they cost together nowadays about 5 million gil.
You probably will spend more pimping out a thf, but the torque and gloves are pretty damn good if you care about your enfeebling (unless you're not hume, but you'll probably be paying for the +4 mnd +4 int somewhere else at a high price) | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 07-02-2006, 11:09 PM | #22 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: Walnut Grove Posts: 48 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 1,061 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,061 Donate | Re: The most gear dependant job? Dependability being an issue and gil aside as long as players dont resort to buying gil to make their character better and leaving the score to be settled in game I think PLD is best but are very unbalanced and since I have never played as a red mage but seen them solo quite well and are super flexable in a party there is a tough battle on one side pld and on the other red mage
I tryed white mage, and went to 73, but its so hard to make gil as a mage its almost makes me want to buy gil on a daily basis ________________________________________________
