In all seriousness, I offer you a story:

I wasn't fortunate enough to get in on the NA PS2 'beta', and I didn't have a computer at the time to run FFXI, so I found a local internet cafe that had copies of the computer beta. I'd run around on Cactuar server with my friends, in my bronze subligar (because it had one more defense point! *drool*). Some of the kiddies next to us looked over at my male elf in his bronze cap beret, bronze harness, and bronze subligar, and went 'dude, where's your pants?' , among some other things, and then laughing.

...never again. ;_; , Wevvie must wear pants now. Except that one time after getting my Paladin Subligar in Phomiuna when we all wore ours.... I was curious!

Oh yeah. Thankfully in FFXI, as opposed to most RPGs, there are options to satisfy all camps of people. There're tough, pretty, cute, sexy, and friendly looking characters throughout all the available choices, so everyone can be what they want.

In other (domestic) RPGs, I always got tired of all the men being Conan clones, and all the women having cheekbones you could slice a tomato (No problem!) on... FFXI people actually look more 'normal' to me ^^

Perosnally, I don't get the mithra fixation men have. I think a catgirl needs to have a fluffy tail and big wide ears to be 'cute'. FFXI mithra have skinny tiny ears, and a tail that looks mostly denuded. Bah! Ugly sez me.

Mithra also have some weird animations. /panic for one. I don't know of anyone who ever panicked like that and the only people I can imagine doing so are professional piano players.


But that's just why /I/ chose not to play a mithra, even though Hyrist desperately wanted me to (And I think resents me a little for not).

We have I think, 3 mithra in our linkshell, none of them female. One plays mithra because their main is thf, and wanted to take advantage of the natural dex of the mithra, the others, because they can.

My oldest friend in game is male, but plays an Elvaan female - his excuse is that if he has to look at his character for a long time, make it pleasing on the eye! I am female, and play and Elvaan female, but because of the face I chose (the one with the braids) I get more comments about being a grandmother than anything...

Let me contribute my drivel.

Manthra here, not ashamed. Anytime a discussion pops up about Mithra with 'front-tails', I stand firm in my position. My gender has nothing to do with this game. It doesn't affect the ways I play, talk, or treat others. People that meet me in game have a 99.999999% chance that they will never meet me in person. As far as they can tell, I'm a Mithra that levels slowly and plays infrequently. That's it. If people think I'm a woman, fine. They think I'm a man? Fine as well. They think I'm a damned Chupacabra, brilliant. It matters not.

That being said, do what you want. Anybody that will split hairs and give you crap about your choices aren't worth a second thought. Just like RL. If some stranger comes up and makes a crack about you, so effing what? It just isn't worth your energy.

On a side note- I could never find a Mithra sexy. Although my mother is married to my step-dad, and she's not very old, she has become the 'cat-lady.' A visit to her place, amongst the 20 or so flying, crapping, fur-spreading, fighting cats that live in every square inch of breathable air will make you think twice about anything that remotely looks like a cat.

Play whatever race you want for whatever reason you wish. If you want to be like the Mithra on my server cleverly named Diditforthedex and choose it for your job choices, go for it. Or roleplay. Or don't want to look at Hume/Galka/Elvaan {rear} during the 85% of the game you see yourself from behind.

I personally just always choose the frailer, dexterous races in whatever RPG I play. The fact that it placed me as a girl, or better a catgirl, is just a side effect.

Yes, I've been called a perv. Or a loser. But I'm not the one hitting on Mithra, now am I? Once I've been told that he didn't care what my real gender was, he just wanted to RP for an hour going on a date in Kazham =o_O=

As for my experiences, my Linkshell is quite Mithra heavy, and the majority of them are female. Four of my offline friends play this game together, and the female in it is a Galka!

If you want to live fear free from the name calling of idiots, be a Hume male. Like 58% of the players in this game. But I'm already a human male, why would I want to play one on TV?
