The Assault mission “Imperial Agent Rescue”

We must be doing it completely wrong. Only busted down 1 door in 4 runs. Obviously not the door we needed.

I've never done an assault before, But if it's the one I remember reading about then to break the doors open you should turn your back to the door close enough to be hit and wait for the mob to Tp move to break it open.

My apologies if it's the wrong one or if that's what you are currently doing then /comfort.

Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

you're thinking of the right one. The TP moves just arent hitting the doors. or at least very rarely hitting them. And plenty of fire spits going off (the TP move that can hit doors).

Getting mixed reports about moving out of the way. Some say yes, others say no. I'm up for any suggestions at this point.

I haven't done many Assaults... but this one really sounds familiar to me. Is it early on? If it is, then I do remember attempting to get doors to break by trying to time a "dodge" (move to the side) timed with mamool's TP moves on my DNC. So, if it's what I'm remembering, I believe my group got the clear by "moving out of the way". Good luck though.
Any opinions expressed are my own, and generally unpopular with others. I'm sure you believe that you understand what you think I typed, but I'm not so sure you realize that what you think you read is not what I meant. Maybe, read it again and insert smiley faces, rainbows, and valium as needed.

Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

Yes it is an early on one. Infact the first one for that grouping (mamool training gorunds). so i guess all you need is assault access to do it. Which is why i thought it'd be easier.

Ok, were going to try dodging next time. I thought we tried it on the first run with no luck. Pretty sure we didnt do it on the last 2 runs. Probably going to give it a shot thursday when we get 3/4 tags again.

      - - - Updated - - -

Assault is called "imperial agent rescue". First mission under Mamool Training ground.

Mission is to trick surrounding Mamools into breaking down their own gates to save an NPC. 3 gates total with an NPC behind a random one.
Mamools need to use the TP move Fire Spit, Axe Throw or Spear throw on you and hit the gate behind you in order to break it.

If you get the right door, you'll talk to the NPC and the rune will pop up.

Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

      I remember a little more.

My group had me come as DNC because having a high evasion made the mammook miss me with their TP moves and it was more likely to hit the door behind me. I remember we failed at least once or twice before deciding to switch to an evasion tank. I don't remember what the failed set-ups consisted of or the reasoning behind them. I just remember that evasion tanking worked well and this was back when cap was 75, I believe. I want to say that I still timed moving myself out of the line of fire so the TP would hit the door. I don't know if it was just the evasion making the TP move miss me, or if it was me "moving out of the way", or a combo of the two that got us the clear.

I also remember we had no inclination to ever do that Assault ever again.

Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

I doubt moving has any effect. A mob will always hit you dead-center with cone attacks even if you're constantly running around it. It's pretty easy to test with an attack like a bird mob's Wing Cutter which is a cone attack without being a breath attack, so it does consistent damage. Even if you could move out of the way, if the "ready" phase of those attacks is so short that they can't be stunned reliably, you'd be moving too late anyways.

I too hated that Assault. It was frustrating how much of its success or failure was left up to chance.

Well, at the end of the day, it’s worth a shot trying to see if moving works. I’m sure I’ll post it here or in accomplishment thread on Friday depending on how it goes.

Any other assaults that I should pay extra attention to? Any other ones that heavily rely on chance or have a high failure rate?

My static blew through all but one of the assault missions, and i remember 100% the one that gave us troubles... Fuck Black Shuck! It probably took us 15 tries to beat him. Well... that was with a 75 level cap. Are you capped at 75 now for assaults? If that one gives you trouble (meaning you're capped at 75) let me know and I can tell you what we did.

Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

That assault is a pain in the ass.

Do it the way my group did. Stick the mobs with DoT to feed them TP over time and work on 3 of them at once. Have someone supertank them all in front of the door and melee them down with the lowest damage weapons you can find.

Keep your back turned to the door you want borken down at all times and stay as close as humanly possible to it.

If you break their weapons they will NOT use the fire spitting move that breaks the doors down. If their weapons break... kill them and don't waste your time.

It took around 5 minutes of melee on each of the gates to break them down. Ours ended up being the last door we broke open and we only narrowly won... but we were 1/1 on the assault.

Er, if you mean DoT spells, those don't feed TP last time I checked . . .

I imagine first-person mode would be extremely useful for keeping one's back to the door while being as close as possible to it.

I was always under the impression that DoT fed TP. If I'm wrong... then my life is a lie.
