I heard about dat files that change your appearance in game etc Surely this isn't allowed and wouldn't only the player using those dat files be able to see it? The whole thing confuses me!

yes only you will be able to see the changed DATs. The whole idea is about customizing your own personal experience. You can, of course, share the dats you created with other players.

Considering how SE has a pole stuck up its rear, I wouldn't be surprised if tampering with the dats was a bannable offense, however, there is no way SE can find out unless you tell someone and they report you.

Can't say I've ever heard of anyone getting banned for dat editing, though.

DAT modifications are PC only.
