Looking for equipment for my lvl 18 MNK in Bastok, I find a Purple Belt for 50k gil.
Since I was 25K short and still wearing a white belt, I get to work farming.

When I finally have the money I go to buy it but I find that its already been sold.

Since while farming I got to lvl 20, I decide to do my first trip to Jeuno for the Chocobo quest. While waiting to feed the chocobo, I decide to stop at the AH. The prices are huge but I try buying at a lower cost.

What a surprise

Purple Belt 50K -> bought at 10K
Republic Knucles 100K -> bought at 20K
Mrc Hachimaki 30K -> bought at 20K

For the price of that Purple Belt I got some really good gear.

That's because a lot of things on AH are people's old crap they just want to get rid of

I'm not complaining.

It's just that half of the stuff I needed was never on sale in Bastok or at a really high price.
If I think how much I spent on that Power GI.


Something I didn't know was that all the AH are connected, so you can only sell 7 items in total.

Yeah, the prices vary widely. Often it's a case of the price in the main cities sort of lagging behind Jeuno, where things go up and down a lot faster. It's not really worth three chocobo trips to compare prices on, say, food or silent oils, but if you're saving up for a big piece of gear, it might be. Unless you have mules hanging around to do it for you.

Another reason why prices are low on that particular gear is because PUPs are either generally higher than that now, and everybody's clearing out their gear, or people have stopped with Pup altogether.

I had a fun encounter with the Jeuno AH the other night. I had two Archer's Knives I bought long ago and decided to check the current price: 70k. I think, "Wow, so how much is a Hawker's Knife?" To my surprise: 60k. In the end, I actually made 20,000 gil by upgrading my equipment.

Pups can't use the Merc Hachimawhatever or the Purple Belt.

The reason those items were so much lower is because more people sell those items in Jeuno. As you get higher lvls that 50k will seem like pocket change compared to what you'll be feeding into the Jeuno AH. And sadly most of the gear you'll want/need will *never* (if not rarely) be on sale in a starter city.
