Re: Keyboard vs Gamepad

While TheGrandMom may have had a positive experience with Logitech, that has not been the experience of most everyone else I've talked with (10+ people, both IRL and on various forums). Two different versions of the Logitech Dual Action that I myself bought both had extremely shoddy controls, and they were bought 3 months apart in different states.

If you are going to buy something from them, save the receipt, or better yet, save your trouble and just buy a $10 USB Playstation adaptor at Radio Shack.

Well first off, your going to have to buy the adapter to use the NetPlay on your computer anyways. And second of all, your talking about an entirely different controller.

Logitech Dual Action (the controller you mentioned) http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...CONTENTID=6951

Logitech NetPlay http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...CONTENTID=6635

The NetPlay is a PS2 controller and the Dual Action is a PC controller.

I have been using the NetPlay since EQOA came out. In fact, everyone here does and so do several of my extended family members. I've recommended it to many people and I have rarely heard a complaint. In fact, only many thanks for letting them know about a good controller.

Dang... That's what I call a controller... All it needs now is a joystick, steering wheel, and foot pedals...

Re: Keyboard vs Gamepad

i have that keyboard for my ps2, it works really good. i play 99% time on pc and use keyboard. one thing that helps me is by setting keyboard on compact mode, makes it play like fps. this is the most comfortable setting for me. also all controls can be changed.

Re: Keyboard vs Gamepad

The logitech DA did have a run of bad units when it was first released, mine included. The analog stick would go twichy and lose its dead zone in the center--so you would move around at the very slightest touch--or just bumped the controller. The axis alignment would go off center as you kept using the analog stick, so you would be spinning in a circle soon enough.

Support gave me the run-around, pissed me off. Some people did get replacements/refunds, I did not. Much flaming in the logitech forums ensued. Apparently gravis, saitek, and other manufacturers had similar problems (not as widespread though).

Lesson? Sony's dual shock controler, while a bit pricey and lacking any special feature--are at the very least, reliable.

Re: Keyboard vs Gamepad

Just buy a PS2 controller, then buy a USB adaptor for it so you can plug it into PC, I found that this game plays horribly with a keyboard, it just wasn't designed for it, unlike WoW and EQ2 where playing with a keyboard is much more comftorable.

Re: Keyboard vs Gamepad

I use a PS2 -> PC adapter that supports rumble and registers each thing seperately. I have it set up so the controls on my PS2 version and my PC version match exactly.

Just a note, I used to use the Logitec WingMan Rumblepad for a little while. It would be fine at first, but the detected "center" kept moving further and further away from the actual center. It got to the point where if I didn't tilt it at all I'd be running right, and to run left I had to get it to the very edge and even then I'd just be walking. Happened to me with 2 different controllers (same type).

Also, you CAN use a keyboard to move on PS2 just the same as PC. It is set up exactly the same, and you can even choose Compact mode.

Re: Keyboard vs Gamepad

There's also a PS2 to PC Parallel port connector availble from buynshop.com, I found it linked from a DDR site because it was good for supporting the PS2 DDR pads on the PC. I prefer the parport interface because Linux had support for it for ages (gamecon driver), and even rigged a SNES controller to use it by hand as an experimental soldering project. Interesting side note, because of the simplicity of the console controller interface, direct hardware polling of a console gamepad this way takes less system time than polling a PC gamepad on a PC's joystick port. (And much less than polling on USB... not of much consequence unless you're pushing your processor power to the limits like I was on my 166MHz, though)

The parport adaptor is only $6, last I checked. So if you don't need to keep something else (like a printer) plugged into that port (I do my printing over a LAN), it's a pretty good deal.

Re: Keyboard vs Gamepad

I dont understand why using the ps2 controller is any better than a keyboard. For controllers, you must select the macro by using your D-Pad. For a PC keyboard, all you have to do is hit two keys. Can anyone enlighten me on why the controller is better? I used it for the pc and hated its slowness at everything (besides movement)

Re: Keyboard vs Gamepad

Can flip through macro sets faster (rdm likes this), also easier to select PT members since you don't have to look down at your function keys (dpad).
