E.G. i buy a cd key and a download link is given?

But it's not out yet. You can still buy it online at just about every online game vendor sells it. Just check 'em out.  [font="Comic Sans MS"]Odude

Also, be extremely wary of used copies of FFXI, as there are a number of users who have done unscrupulous things with their accounts and thus have had their CD keys banned, which makes their keys useless.
Caveat emptor.

yeah i wasnt planning on buying the cd key from ebay or any other online auction.
