Probably could stretch it to 6 years depending on how you break out the Far West/East/North/South areas and also making storylines around more of the races or more to a specific npc character or something.

Re: any sequel to ffxi planned?

Making a sequel would be really dumb unless you could transfer over your characters. I know I personally wouldn't want to start from scratch and I'm sure a lot of others feel the same way (those of us who have been playing the game for a long time), we don't want to see all our work go down the drain.

A sequel for an MMORPG is an expansion pack anyway. Look at EQ. They tried it with EQOA and EQ2 and niether did very well.

Re: any sequel to ffxi planned?

No business survives on without planning for the future.

There's probably many ideas floating around, but there's probably little headway as there are some problems that only time will solve.

Three problems that arise are,

that Xbox360 and PS3 and possiblity revolutionm are still pretty resent, so getting dev kits familiarity is needed before you can do any significiant work on a it. Not to mention unsure which one will be the dominate system for sure yet.

The 2nd problem is PCs and min specs. With a refresh of consoles, PCs are "behind" for the time being. If SE wants massive multi platform, they gotta draw lines on what they are doing.

3rd problem is probably a biggy, and that's broadband.
Sony made a big mistake of not predicting the slowness of NA broad band killing their "online hub" idea for PS2. (which sucessor PS3 is trying for again)

IF S-E does make a sucessor, it is crucial that they decide to drop modem support or not. The MMO would be completely different depending on where you draw the line for bandwith.

Puting something with a 10k/sec channel would drastically make a lot of options avaiable, with everything from voice support, to avatar customization, and beyond.

PCs aren't as far behind as Sony/Microsoft would like you to think. John Carmack (The main guy behind Doom and Quake) talked about it during his speech at the latest Quakecon, he basically said PCs will catch up and surpass PS3/Xbox360 in a year or so... maybe less. And I doubt there are many people that know more than him about game engines and hardware :p

All computers now aday should at least have a 128Kb/s ADSL conection, thats what i have and its very cheap($20 canadian a month($16us)) and is the minimum speed i recomend for any internet use. So puting a 10Kb/s min IMO is fair to be able to improve gameplay.

With a 2k price tag.

Computer that catch up to that level of "normal" PC...whatever "normal" is still quite a bit away

Right now in terms of pure "game oriented" processing power needed to match the xbox360 and PS3 will be costly for at least this year and the next.

I'm guessing if you're PC gamer, those spec prices will need to go down to about 1k before it's considered

And low end consumers will expect a PC to be around 600, so I'll give it a $800 price tag which really is around 2-3yrs down the road.

My thoughts are about the same. Though right now we're not all that hot to roll it out lol. I think US is about 66% penetration rate.

And it's very dangerous to miss guess as PS2 story unfolded... A MMO development would need about 2yrs prior notice for that level of work...so it's important to get stuff at least sorta right when you make a sucessor.

Actually they have implemented a free Live package with the system. This gives you access to MMO's that you must pay for, i.e. FFXI. The service is free.

"Multiple Levels of Service
On Xbox 360, you'll have a choice of service level. The Xbox Live Silver service means you can connect your Xbox 360 console to a broadband Internet connection and get functionality right out of the box. The premium Xbox Live Gold service delivers the complete online connection package. The breakdown is as follows:

Xbox Live Silver level

Create an online Gamer Profile
Access the Xbox Live Marketplace
Engage in voice and text messaging
Talk to a single friend at a time using voice chat
Receive video messages from Gold level members
Access massively multiplayer online games (additional fees may apply)

Xbox Live Gold level

Paid level of service
All the features of Silver level, and additionally:
o Play multiplayer games online
o Video chat
o Multiplayer online tournaments
o Participate in Xbox Live online programming, such as Game with Fame, Play and Win, and Prime Time activities
"

Depends where you live. SURE it is available for you for that price. But that's not the case everywhere. For example, I live near Anchorage and its about $60 (USD) for DSL + I gotta pay about $15 for the phone line. I DO have it, but not everyone wants to pay for that. (Just FYI, there's only 1 DSL company and 1 cable company there and the cable company costs more if you're just going for the internet connection).

So, before you can expect everyone to have it when it is cheap, you have to remember just because its cheap where you live doesn't mean its that way anywhere else. Hell, MANY places in the US don't even have broadband (aka: very far outside cities).

ha, never judge by those crappy screen shots, those are low res shot anyway, the game when finished will look as good if not better then FFXI because it will be PC only from what I understood. Besides who cares what it looks like, if the story and gameplay is good I am happy, people that grade games based on graphics are retarded lol, becuase I am sorry.....eye candy does not make the game
