Best tweak you can do to your graphics in a post I made on my linkshell forums:

only new bit of information is the mip-mapping part and that's also somewhere in the thread.
I'm a little confused about the mip-mapping. It replaces textures far away with lower resolution textures. Then you apply AF to make it look better. Why not just leave mip-mapping off? Unless you don't have the video memory, but then you wouldn't be using AF.

Not exactly the same. It goes into mip-mapping, sound channels and AF too.

I totally agree with you.

One thing I do want to try is textures above 2048. What I learned from Pete and his plugin, is that the FX and 6800 cards can do 4096x4096. Ati's latter cards can do 4096x2048. I just thought of this now. Has anyone else tried anything higher than 2048? At 1024x768 monitor resolution, I'm gonna try 4096x3072.

If you have mip-mapping off, you'll notice objects/floor/etc. in the distance shimmer as you look/move around. With it on (at 2 or 3 even) you'll not notice the effect at all (or notice very little of it).

I disagree with the author of that page. Even if you don't turn AF on, mip-mapping creates a noticeable difference. AF will make it look better still.

Sound won't make your game look better. As for mip-mapping and AF, I could have sworn that was mentioned in the later pages of Rychair's thread too.

Err, i sure hope you have a hefty video card. that is some massive amount of data you are trying to push out on the card.

I haven't tested it myself, maybe I should.

4096x3072 crashes. 3072x2304 was ok, but it was running really slow and actually looked worse.

I can over clock the memory more fine. The core won't move with the extra pipelines enabled, but it's better to have them than the higher O'C. Runs cooler that way too.

my screen size is set to 1152x864;

is there anyway I can edit the registry so the background is 1152x1152?

If not, should I just bump up the overlay even higher?

I can tell you from personal experience, using an ATI Radeon 9600, not oc'd, it get's a bit laggy when using the reg tweak to break 1024 x 1024, but I do fine @ that with all other settings on or maxed.
