Well, a mule is not going to make you any money by itself. Basically, the idea is that those 50 slots in your Mog Safe are going to run out eventually, and it's a lot less of a hassle to pay the extra real-world $1 a month for a second character (and thus another 50 mog safe slots) than it is to buy storage in-game or complete the Mog Safe expansion quests. You can use the free delivery service located outside any AH to send your excess stuff to your mule.

Another benefit to having a mule is another 7 items you can have up for auction at any given time--send the stuff to the mule (with a little money to pay the AH fee!) and have the mule send the proceeds back. Ideally, you should create your mule in another town, since AH prices can vary and you might be able to get a better deal--buying or selling--by shopping between 2 or 3 auction houses.

Another benefits of mules are being able to shop in different towns without actually going to them. Getting a mule in Jeuno is especially nice once you start getting higher in levels. Here are a list of the advantage to using mules I have found:
* 7 extra AH spots
* 50 mog house + 30 inventory space
* Access to different town AH's
* Gardening!
* Fishing!
* Setting up bazaars

The reason I say gardening and fishing is because I HATE going back to town when I am leveling. I am lucky to play 2-3 hours a day and I don't want to spend 1 of those hours running between town and where I am killing to check how my plants are. Therefore, I use mules for gardening since I never have to worry about leaving my plants for too long.

Same thing with fishing. Going and getting fishing gear or bait can be a waste of time if you only want to fish for 30-60 min on a full/new moon. Therefore I just have my Windhurst mule do my fishing during those times. I just load him up with level 1 fishing gear, Mithran rod, and some little worms or insect balls and he can make some good cash during the right moon phase. And it saves me the time of leaving where I am fighting.
