You will generally not have a bad experience with jerks when you're asking/looking for help (though rarely will). The jerks will usually just ignore you if you're looking for help, so the only people who you are exposed to are nice people (and there are a lot of them) who are willing to help.
The problem comes in when you start having to group up with other people to make progress, and you're forced to to come into contact with a broader cross-section of the community... one that includes the jerks, the children, the know-it-alls, the incompetents, the racists, ect. That's what really has ruined several play sessions for me, more so far than I can recall in all my years playing EQ (though a shoddy memory is likely to blame for that).
But since this thread is meant to highlight the positive.... hm. I've had a lot of help with things, though mostly from my linkshell (and I got one early, first day playing because I had friends who played before I started playing). I've received a lot of help from them (Rank 3 and 4 missions, answering various questions, getting my Kazham pass, getting my RSE slacks) but I haven't had any particular experience with strangers that stick out in my mind... a few people who have stopped to Raise me or people in my party, or random acts of kindness like people buffing me or healing me. One guy gave me a Tarut card I needed for free.
Trick is, I guess, to put yourself in a position where you are more often exposed to the good elements of the game than the bad. Best way to do that is a good linkshell, but only that takes you so far... I've only been in 3-4 parties with members of my linkshell so far, aside from LS related activities (eco-quests, key hunts, missions, ect.) and even my LS has a couple people who rub me the wrong way.
