i've heard of a rl problem, where two of my friends went to japan and even though the guy understood them perfectly in english he refused to give directions in english... only until they asked injapanese.
oh yeah. i actually do remember somebody trying to talk to me using strictly katakana. ohh man, that was difficult and confusing... since i used to put JE and speak what little japanese i knew from 1 quarter in college, instead of now where i put E and just try to reply if they ask.
i dunno though. as an NA player, would you rather see
[provoke] or ƒ|?[ƒ??[ƒ”ƒHƒbƒN ?
and to any of the import/JP players, would you rather see
[‚Ç‚¤‚à‚_‚肪‚Æ] or "ari~"

imagine japanese people trying to communicate to you using strictly katakana. | As much as you would like to deny it the western culture is an ignorant one, the only reason some Japanese people understand roumaji is because they are taught it in school because westeners wont learn their language so they have to learn ours, its sad but true | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-21-2004, 01:44 PM | #18 (permalink) | | Struck Out (Banned) Join Date: Oct 2003 Posts: 738 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 444 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 444 Donate | | Quote: | Originally posted by Amatsu As much as you would like to deny it the western culture is an ignorant one, the only reason some Japanese people understand roumaji is because they are taught it in school because westeners wont learn their language so they have to learn ours, its sad but true | Dumbest Post Ever.
I guess we are an ignorant culture, because our schools don't teach a language that is primarily used in one country in the world. So to cure us of our ignorance, we should then learn Japanese, Korean, Swahili, Italian, French, German, Chinese, Malay, Indonesian, and every other language in the world. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-21-2004, 01:45 PM | #19 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2003 Posts: 214 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 171 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 171 Donate | | Quote: | | As much as you would like to deny it the western culture is an ignorant one, the only reason some Japanese people understand roumaji is because they are taught it in school because westeners wont learn their language so they have to learn ours | You do know why no one in America learns kana, right? It's not because the Westerners are "ignorant."
The secondary languages taught in most high schools in the US are Spanish, French, and Latin, all of which use the Roman alphabet.
The secondary language taught at most schools in Japan is English.
Also, if you think western culture is ignorant, are you going to call Japanese culture ignorant when they go to China and communicate in kana instead of full chinese characters? I went to eat dimsum today and there was katakana next to the chinese characters. I guess you could call that a sort of "Romanization."
When it comes to dealing with language in the US, because of its European roots, we tend to learn more European languages, as opposed to Japan, which primarily deals with China (with its Chinese roots) and the US (cultural hegemony post-WW2).
It really isn't ignorance, but more of a cultural origin thing. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-21-2004, 02:06 PM | #20 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Posts: 312 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 494 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 494 Donate | "why is courtesy so difficult?"
IM SORRY BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN????
I made this thread as an effort for NA players to learn how to speak some japaneese. We can't type in Katakana, so all we have is romanji.
Why are people flaming this thread???!!!! What is your peoples problem. What is wrong with trying to learn at least some of another language. I know that romanji is not the prefered way for japaneese to type but it the best that we in the United States can do. Aside from using the translator this is the closest we get ( and the translator is incomplete I am sorry but I want to carry on more of a conversation then {party}? and {Provoke} and maybe the occasional {Thank You} I use the translator all the time but it is simply not good enough).
You people have some serious issues if you are flaming this thread....
Here is a thought if you think that romanji is stupid (although I don't know why it is "stupid" I mean I am just trying to communicate with my friends who DO understand romanji and think it is neat that I am at least trying to communicate with them in their native language.) then just don't post here.
I did a search on this topic and found that the last thread was locked. And I thought that has got to be the stupidist thing in the world if a thread about learning another language had to be locked. Is this forum so out of control that someone can not ask for a couple of phrases translated without being flamed.
Mods maybe you should lock all the forums in that case because this is just insane you people have problems. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-21-2004, 02:29 PM | #21 (permalink) | | Struck Out (Banned) Join Date: Oct 2003 Posts: 738 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 444 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 444 Donate | I don't know what Kamaaina is getting so pissed off about.
To get back on topic, hiragana/katakana isn't hard to learn. All it takes, really, is a couple of weeks, and you'll pretty much be able to read it (kanji is harder). If you really think you "owe it to them and other JP players I party with to at least attempt to communicate with them in their own language," then why not learn it properly, rather than romajii only?
Having said that, for better or worse Square has purposely limited all NA users to be able to communicate either in Romajii or using Tab. The way I see it, neither is better than the other (that is to say, both are bad). A lot of JPs find it difficult to read romajii. On the other hand, using tab to talk is a horrible, horrible butchering of the language - we all know this by now when seeing all the tabbed shouts in Jeuno. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-21-2004, 02:36 PM | #22 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Posts: 312 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 494 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 494 Donate | What I am getting so pissed off about is you people coming in here and telling me what is so wrong with Romanji.
That is not the topic why don't you go read the topic. I asked for some phrases not an argument abour Romanji itself.
I CANT USE KATAKANA!!! the game won't allow me. So what is your guys' point. That I should not do anything because Katakana is ideal and if I can't use it then why even try??
Also...maybe I have something called a life...<college> I don't exactly have time to learn an entirely different alphabet especially if I can't even type it in game.
I never asked anyone their opinion about Romanji. I was just looking for some phrases. My friend CAN understand Romanji, sure not everyone can. But my friends CAN so please would you just stop already....
How can you guys argue over something like this. All I asked is if anyone knew any phrases. What is your guys' problem. I asked my japaneese friend about this and he said "yes many people do not understand Romanji, but at least it is better then not trying anything at all". | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-21-2004, 04:30 PM | #23 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2003 Posts: 214 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 171 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 171 Donate | | Quote: | | IM SORRY BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???? | i'll tell you what it means.
apparently, if i use tab to attempt to make certain words appear in kana, people get pissed off. apparently, if i use roman characters, people get pissed off. apparently, if i just use freakin /emotes and bow a lot, people get pissed off. apparently, if i use ^^ people get pissed off.
apparently, japanese players can say "‚æ‚낵‚_‚Å‚·?`" but i can't say "yoroshiku desu~~~~~" because "‚_‚̃iƒCƒg‚ª‚΂©‚Ë
?@?O?O"
i guess relying on other japanese players and growing up in a partial japanese network won't help me learn, given this weird language crap courtesy bs.
in all seriousness, calm down. just because you made a thread doesn't mean we can't form opinions about and around the subject material. there's nothing really wrong in this thread. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-21-2004, 04:36 PM | #24 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Posts: 312 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 494 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 494 Donate | Why can't you go make your own thread and debate the merits of the japaneese language there...
I just wanted some phrases....
Its like someone making a topic asking for a world pass to Ragnorak and you come in and make 10 posts about how people are ruining the economy by undercutting AH prices. And then that giant war starts agian.
At the top of the forum there is a button that says "Post a Topic".
Then you could make a thread that says "Romanji SUCKS, DONT USE IT EVER!!!" | | ::Quote Selected:: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | All times are GMT -8.
