Job levels versus character levels

Hi everybody, I'm a bit new here, but if I may ask this...

Regarding jobs and the level cap, is it possible to level up each job you take up to the level cap, or can you only level up jobs, with the total adding up to no more than the cap?

Say for example, the cap was 50. Could I level up Red Mage to 50, then level up whatever else to 50?

Or could I only do something like Red Mage 25, White Mage 15, Black Mage 10, and thereafter have to wait until the cap is raised?

I was thinking about this a few days ago, and I didn't find a relevant topic in search, so I thought I'd ask. If it's the latter, I'll really have to start thinking about my character's potential development...

You can raise each up to max, I think. But can't use skills unless you're currently that job, so you'd switch around.

You can raise each one to the max level cap but it will take a long time.^^
