I been wondering for a while now and there was a thread on the VN Boards about it too, but no one seens to know what happened.
Does the game ever explain what horror transpired in that cursed place? I it is the spookiest place in FFXI that I have been so far.

From what I understand the mines used to be a place of mining used by the Humes and Galka. Quadavs rushed in and violently killed damn near everything in there. Miners tend to be very focused in their work so if you killed one on the job he would more than likely become a ghost because of "unresolved issues". These are the ones you see roaming the hallways not bothering anyone but looking generally creepy. Onto the child ghosts. I think these are the dead miners children. Possibly killed with the parents they would remain near them as ghosts due to yet more unfinished buisness. It also relates to bonds of friendship and familty, stuff like that. The only other ghosts I've seen there are is the floating maiden and the pond of red ghosts. First time I went to Gusgen was for skulls as a lvl 18 RDM so I didnt even know its reputation. 2nd time I was there was two nights ago getting my RSE. It was interesting to study the types of ghosts that linger the hallways^^.

I saw that little child ghost when I was hunting for magicked skulls. Scary as anything. I never saw the others though, I might make a trip through there for some sightseeing!

The miners invaded Quadav territory to fulfill their bottomless greed for precious metals. The Quadavs fought back, but were eventually driven from their homes by tides of hume and galka invaders. So you shouldn't take pity on the ghosts, it's their own fault for getting killed.
When i was hunting skulls with my PT our leader shouted to get away from the ghost...dunno why, thought it'd kill you or something lol. But i just stood afar and watched it erriely walk around. o_o;;
BTW, has anyone heard that siren that rings in the mines at night? Man, its really spooky.

I heard it while getting a couple of skulls from some linkshell friends. I live near a firehouse, so I thought it was them at first, until I realized it was coming from my surround sound.
I thought I was hearing things until my LS friends asked what that sound was.....
First time i heard that siren i have to admit I booked out the mines as fast as my galkan legs could take me.
Gusgen is that scary? Om headed there today!

nah it's pretty cool. the ghost thing freaked me out the first time (i was like "oh crap! Run!"), but the siren is kinda funny. We always /say "Clear the tracks, incoming train" whenever we hear that now.

I believe that a couple of the posters are mixing the Palborough Mines backstory with Gusgen. Note my reply in the VNBoards (Gusgen is the home of a great sealed away evil, not just some wimpy Quads). The siren signals that a NM Level 36 Ghost has spawned somewhere in the zone.

In all seriousness though, I heard that it was the skeleton king awakening, but we never saw any traces of it...this was back in Beta, and it was a level 25 telling me this when I was level 16... I took it with a grain of salt..
