is this the case?
also, are hits based on a dice roll scenario, like eq. eq there dosent have to be a physical contact between character weapon and monster, in ffxi is there? can you dodge an attack by doing a backwards dash sort of manuever?
it just seems like there is much more of a tactical strategy in ffxi than other mmorpgs, not so mucheffectively using skills and having higher level/hp/defense/attack than your opponent. or effectuve spell use.
any comments would be grand. thx in advance. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 09-20-2003, 05:08 PM | #2 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2003 Posts: 64 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 327 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 327 Donate | I have never played eq...but this is what i know about the ffxi fighting system...Your weapons have a certain amount of delay...so if you have an axe that has a delay of 400 then an axe that has a delay of 200 you'll get more hits in with the axe with 200 delay. Magic works like this, you cast a magic and it has a casting time...if your hit during your casting time, the magic will be canceled. Umm well about dodging i dont really know...well i run around the monster and sometimes it misses but, i dont think running around him does any thing. Also you get lvl ups and on thing like parrying, evasion, ect which are seperate from your normal lvl ups. One thing that bothers me is that if i dont have auto lock on i seem to miss more...wish that didnt happen.
p.s. any1 feel free to put in there piece of pie, or correct mine. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 09-20-2003, 05:29 PM | #3 (permalink) | | Banned. After you have engaged combat the hits/dodges/evades/etc.. are determined by math and not any action you might take. That is .. any skills, spells, abilities you might use will effect the combat but, for example, moving your character around does not effect your chances to hit the mob or the mobs chances to hit you. The results of the combat are not predetermined .. there are a lot of variables that will effect it but, at the same time, its not a true real-time system.
If you decide to run during the middle of combat when you see the mob beginning an attack, that started attack will execute and hit/miss(depending on all the variables of course, your distance to the mob will not, however, be considered in the equation) .. tho, the mobs NEXT attack might not go off if you get out of range fast enough.
The system in FFXI seems almost like the "continous" turn based system in Fallout Tactics, if you ever played that.
I have not played EQ but, for the sake of a comparison, if you played Eve and Earth & Beyond .. the combat system in FFXI is closer to the one in Eve then Earth & Beyond. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 09-25-2003, 09:15 AM | #5 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2003 Posts: 14 Style: Dark - Version 5 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 54 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 54 Donate | It is similar to EQ only in a few points. The game auto attacks for you, and you have to be in range. The auto attack is only for your basic attack, however, there are many other things you can do, that I believe go beyond any class abilities & disciplines from EQ. (things like weapon skills, and timing of the weapon skills to combo with your party, which is something called Renkei if I'm not mistaken)
I hope I'm not misleading you, though...this is a far, far better game than EQ ever was. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 09-26-2003, 05:36 AM | #6 (permalink) | | Veteran Member Brain of Knowledge Join Date: Dec 2002 Posts: 1,670 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 1,706 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,706 Donate | atma, that is correct, but i would like to clarify that the only thing that circling an enemy does for a melee person is to get in position for renkei, as you said, or if you are a theif, to get in position to use backstab (in which you deal more damage from behind the mob). ~Chipmunk~
