Minor Square-Enix News

Quote:
The merger between the two major developers may run into some problems.

In November 2002, Square and Enix announced that they would merge later this year via a stock exchange that placed a higher value on Enix shares than on Square shares. However, Masafumi Miyamoto, Square's majority stockholder, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the stock-exchange ratio that was initially agreed upon. Both companies will head into further deliberations to discuss the matter.

I wonder what this means....

Square, Enix merger faces hurdle

Think that will have any influense on the game? Cause if I'm not mistaken (maybe I am) Square wanted to wait that the fusion was complete before releasing FFXI...

Any comments?

I heard about this for a while now and I didn't post it because I felt it didn't have any direct relationship with FFXI.

This is all about potential.

When you compare Squaresoft and Enix, you find that Enix is a more stable company. This is because Enix has many other business activities aside from video games that can keep it stable in the event that something goes wrong with one of their projects. They publish mangas and even anime shows in Japan, aside from publish games.

Enix, however, doesn't have an internal developer team like Squaresoft does. This is why Mr. Miyamoto(not the nintendo dude) wants to ensure that he's still an influence within the company. Instead of a merger, this action will be more of a "absorbtion" of Square by Enix. This would give Enix a powerful influence in Japan and the US, while having complete control over the company.

If this merger doesn't come through, Squaresoft has the potential to become even larger. They have just locked a new series as a big hit (Kingdom Hearts) and are on to making their first MMORPG. They have a gamecube project in the works, along with a Gameboy Advance game to go with it. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, the sequel to Final Fantasy X-2, the upcoming Final Fantasy XII, a new chrono game(Chrono Break), and even the rumored remakes/sequals to Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX.

What does Enix have? They have Star Ocean 3, Drag-on Dragoon, Dragon Quest VIII, and...

I want a merger of forces, not a new leader. I say give an equal ratio of 1:1 so that if I owned 19% of Square, I would own 19% of Square-Enix. Then even though they share assets, each team should be alone. I don't want Enix people messing up Final Fantasy, or Squaresoft giving Dragon Quest VIII the best FMV ever. It's best to share the money and pump out games faster... and not worry about competition(which is probably their most feared thing in the game business world).

So... I won't discard the possibility that there won't be a merger. All this does is slow down both companies, since they have to renegociate and restrategize their approaches. I think they'll merge, the only thing is that the ratio will be increased to maybe 1:0.91 or something like that.

I'm very happy that they are merging, however i cant help but wonder how sony feels about all this. If you remember Sony owns stock in square and there was quite a lot of commotion for them to make a game for Gamecube. This merger has delayed a lot of squares projects though, i hope all is resolved soon.

*bashes igaghost with a an overly large mallet because he has a Vash avatar and I don't*

On topic: My only concern with this pairing is the fact that Enix may be able to support Squaresoft in a way that will bring FFXI to the US, nothing else matters at this point. If a Square-Enix merger can bring FFXI within my grasp than so be it.
