I have heard many people beg to differ on the topic of summoning. A majority of people seem to find Summoning a possible ability for all/some mages, whereas others find it to be an actual job.
Everyone is welcome to post their opinions or speculations, for this is a topic that'll plague us until the release of the Final Fantasy XI expansion... | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 01-12-2003, 07:38 AM | #2 (permalink) | | Veteran Member Brain of Knowledge Join Date: Dec 2002 Posts: 1,670 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 1,701 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,701 Donate | i've heard from several people that the ability to summon will be available to the mages. But, i think it would be cooler to have a job specifically for summoning The AF would look cool (with that horn and the green robe ).

A Summoner class would make the classes unbalanced, unless serious penalties would be inflicted to those that change to that class. I'm talking like 2 hour refresh between summoning which practically makes you useless when you can't summon. How would a summoner level up? They would depend way too much on leeching off other people in parties and it would take forever.
Summons are things you must quest for... and a summoner seeking a new summon would face the most challenging feats just to get a new summon. Not only that, but to have a summon at your will means you'll have to defeat it.
Would a party actually go with a summoner just so he can get a new summon? I see a very tough life for summoners... especially since you'll only be able to fight, for example, ifrit once. Once you defeat him he'll become yours to summon, but you won't be able to face him again(if you're the summoner), and the other members of the party would have to change to summoner class to summon him... man this is getting confusing.
I still say that guardians will be implemented... and not a summoner class. I just have that feeling. FFXI | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 01-12-2003, 08:09 AM | #6 (permalink) | | Veteran Member Brain of Knowledge Join Date: Dec 2002 Posts: 1,670 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 1,701 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,701 Donate | you make a good point, vissione. But, a summoner could summon a creature, and have it to control, ala FFX, or it could summon it, and it would follow you around for a certain amount of time (like a BST's pet, only you don't give it commands)
That would probably be the only way a summoner job could work. ~Chipmunk~

I dunno! I don't know either! Well i don't know. We're so, stupid! Blue sky, white clouds, clean aiiiiiir! Mountain roads are so unfair, the pavement is bare. If you're referring to that translation of the article on Girade no Genei from RPGFan, then be advised that that was a stupid translation error. Summoner isn't yet confirmed, it could still be the guardian system. Believe me, with my fervent interest in the addition of a Dragoon class, I'll be among the first to know ... I hope ...
As far as summons go ... I don't see why they have do be all that overpowered. Consider FF5. Where I am right now in the game (Pyramid in world 3), I can do a whole heck of a lot more damage with Fire3 than with Ifrit. Like, 1000's compared to 200. The only really damaging summon is Titan, but he's waaaay to MP-intensive to be used much. I think summoner is quite viable as a class, provided that their summons are not much more powerful than black magic. I think the best system for summoning might be a hybrid between FF5 and 6 ... MP-intensive summons once per battle, but you can have more than one choice for a summon.
Anyway, I think it could work.

They may be able to use daggers or swords or staffs or something. I am also waiting to see if they add a dragoon class, spears and lances rock. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 01-12-2003, 11:23 AM | #12 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2003 Posts: 346 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 357 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 357 Donate | Sigh ... I just don't wanna get my hopes up. I've heard stuff like that on the new job classes many times before, and so far every time it's turned out false. I don't mean to say I don't trust you or your source ... and it definitely doesn't burst my bubble. The point is that I don't want a bubble to burst ... that sounded wierd ...
And don't forget Geomancer!

Geomancer was supposedly one of them.
And who says oracles, mimics, dancers, calculators, vikings, warlocks, sorcerers, shamans, etc. can't be added in the future?
