FFXI won't load... Please assist!!!

Hey guys, here's my problem.
I recently reinstalled PoL and FFXI (with all expansions) back on my laptop. It worked fine last time, but I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled, and now whenever I load PoL like normal, whenever I click the "Play" button from the FFXI menu the window simply closes for a moment then returns me to the PoL menu. Can anyone suggest some fixes? I run on Vista, however I never had to download the Vista version of PoL last time, I don't see why I'd need to this time.

You need to d/l and follow the instructions on the website EXACTLY.

Alright I'll do that. However I bought the 2008 Collection and it says it's vista compatible.

FFXI and Playonline are both Vista Compatible. You still have to download the fix for the game though. You are probably the first person I've heard that said they didn't have to download it the first time. Maybe there was a big playonline update or something?

Ok so I spoke with tech support and they told me to uninstall and then do the vista fix, then reinstall, so you guys were right. Now im staring at an AMAZINGLY SLOW moving uninstall bar....3 hours into it...

I am having the exact same problem as you. I used to play on Windows Vista and it worked fine for a year, until last week when this problem started happening. I installed XP on a new partition on the same computer, and then installed FFXI again. The same thing happened. I don't know whats wrong; maybe in that last update on June 1st they messed with video card support or something.

why did you waist time with Tech support when TGM told you what to do (in the link) -.-

Pretty much install Vista-POL (off FFXI website) and fully update it
install game and all expansions, then let it update.

its that easy.

I don't think this has anything to do with vista; same thing is happening to me on XP. Supersheep, you said you were running on a laptop; what graphics card do you have? I am on laptop as well, my card is an NVidia GeForce 8400M GS.
