File repair and corrupt files

I am having problems with my FFXI installation and some corrupt files. Basically the problem reared it's ugly head within a week of my first installation whereby I would get PoL has stopped working error and then get booted to desktop. Once this occured I would have to restart my computer to get back into the game due to it crashing immediately after character selection. Even with the reboots however that never normally gave me anything more than 5 - 10 minutes of online time, less if I zoned or hopped on a chocobo.

I tried a file repair and found I did have corrupt files, around 18 of them in fact. However when the file repair process came to download replacement files only 12 got downloaded leaving 6 corrupt files that it would detect but not download again meaning I had to uninstall the game, restart and reinstall.

I thought this would be because I was using an old 2006 Vana'Diel collection dvd and it may have been damaged so I borrowed my brother's 2008 edition DVD and reinstalled using that. About a week later I ran into the same problem, corrupt files but not all of them were getting repaired forcing another reinstallation and all the hassle that goes with it.

This has now happened about 4 more times, each time needing a full uninstall and reinstall to fix it. My hard drive is fine, done disk checks (including a full surface scan, no bad clusters or anything) , data integrity checks, defrag after each uninstall and reinstall but still keep running into the same problem.

Has anyone had a problem like this before or got any pointers/suggestions of other things I can try? It's getting a bit annoying to have to reinstall and set up the game, macros and everything else on a weekly basis.

Re: File repair and corrupt files

The only suggestion off the top of my head would be to back up your macros to the server next time you get online. If you highlight your character on the character select screen, you can hit ctrl-alt-shift-B on the keyboard to back up your macro file to the POL server. It won't fix your main issue, but it will make it less annoying overall the next time it happens. When you want to restore them upon reinstall, just highlight your character again and hit ctrl-alt-shift-R. This will pull the saved macros from the POL server.

What OS are you on?

What kind of specs does your pc have?

Are you editing any .DATs or using any 3rd party programs?

Cheers for the macro tip, that's one major annoyance down, just the 3.5 hour repatching to go!

Running under Vista Home Premium (32 bit version) and the specs 3 gigs ram (not sure on the speed) Core2 Duo 6400 @ 2.13GHz 2x 250 gig HDDs in RAID0 (maybe the problem? Lack of other file problems though makes me think not), 256mb ATI Radeon x1300 graphics card, X-Fi Platinum Edition sound card.

No .dat editing or 3rd party programs on account of I *like* not being banned. Running in windowed mode from the config program though as I like to flick between the game and Allakhazam/FFXICyclopedia while I wait for a PT and such, could that be causing a problem at all?

On the .dat front though I have noticed a few repeat offenders on the corrupt file list, not always the same though apart from ROM/0/45.dat. That file is always on the list and never gets repaired. I even tried deleting it to try and force a download but nada.

I know there's a vista version of POL, but that should have been included on the 2008 DVD. You may want to download it from the Playonline site just to be sure though.

Yeah I'm using the vista version of the viewer, no file problems with that (apart from it only doing a halfarsed repair job ) just with the game client itself.

Re: File repair and corrupt files

Hello, I am having a similar problem but we are using Windows XP. We recently did a windows re-install and after installing pol and ffxi I would get random errors during gameplay also getting booted from fullscreen mode.

I did a file check and came back with similar corrupt files. Repaired came back with more corrupt files... uninstalled ... reinstalled .. updated.. checked ...corrupt. It was fine before we re installed windows. *Shrug*
