Re: FFXI on Mac?

Also, if you're going to be spending the money on the hardware, even if you install another OS like XP or Ubuntu on it later, Macs are shiny. They aren't great for everything (or even most things), but there are some situations where they have a definite advantage over similarly priced PCs. Apparently no one does general office, or administrative work in your world. On top of it, there is no inherent reason any of those 3 OS's couldn't do all of those jobs. The OS doesn't matter for those workloads. You're talking about applications, not the platform.

I have a Gateway and it works better then my old Dell PC did, or my friends HP notebook. My PC has never had any problems, maybe you just didn't know how to take care of it when you had it or something. But I honestly after using one of my friends Macs, like them better. They are much easier to use in my opinion. That, and I have had PCs my whole life, so I am tired of them.

not taking care of it? hahah you would not even think that if you really knew me.....

and I am not saying one is better then the other, but thats how I have seen the OSs used.

its not that hard to accept it.....

if you want an OS better suited for editing graphics and music, use MacOS
if you want to play games alot, use Windows, because 95% of games are on it.
and if you are a big programer buff, Linus is best suited for ya...

That is why I said I am going to keep my PC for gaming, and use a Mac for everything else that I do on my PC. Because some of the things I want to do on my PC I cant really do that well, even if it had everything that is possible to have on it.

I have had friends do this, and I was thinking of doing it myself, I like Macs. and PCs both, but since I am a heavy gamer, I have stuck with PCs

Tell me, what good does it do for a programmer to be on a platform that is completely unlike what they want to program for?

Re: FFXI on Mac?

Feba and Kailea, stop the namecalling.

On topic:
Kailea does have a point though. The OS's are used for their own specific things in general.

Windows XP = General uses (general users) and games, mainly because of two reasons: Compatability and populairity between regular users. (Note that this is also partly because they don't know any other OS's. A lot of people aren't even sure about Apple/Macintosh.)

Linux = Programming, servers and used as OS for many, many smaller and bigger types of computers. Like pocket watches(uh-huh) or industrial computers/machinery.

Mac OS = Image/video editting and I've noticed that a lot of business people like to use it because of it's looks and simplicity.

On a sidenote, deep down below, Mac is also Unix. Like so many things..

Re: FFXI on Mac?

Just want to point out something; where do programs come from?

They are written by programmers--usually on the same platform the programs are to run on. That means Linux programs are typically written on Linux machines, Windows program on Windows machines, Macintosh programs on Macintosh. EVERY OS is for programmers--otherwise, there would be no programs for it.

Of course, these days "web programming" is what's hot--and you can do that on any of the three platforms.

* * *

The advantage of using a Mac to run windows (and thus FFXI)? Saves your desk space--the physical kind. That would be accomplished by chucking the old PC, in the case of the OP.

The advantage of using a Mac to do general computer stuff and a PC to play FFXI? If you have them side by side, you can use the Mac to look up stuff while playing on PC without shuffling windows--really nifty when running around doing quests.

I play FFXI on PC with my ancient Mac laptop near by. It's a nice combination.

I actually hate those all in one things...... to much working parts and not enough airflow.

There hasn't been anything special about a Mac for graphics since Windows 95, and in fact, NT had several things that were better suited to large file handling then MacOS Classic. SGI/Irix blew them both out of the water.

Unless you write programs for 95% of desktops or use the most popular C/C++ programming environment. Linux has no special use here either.

Windows, OS X and the vast majority of Linux distros are all general purpose OS's. There is nothing in any of them that lends them self to any one purpose strongly over another.

this is also true, but all the same, just because I have my opinion on how OSs are, to me anyway, Feba should not be calling me an idiot.... so I will say this as kindly as I can...

Feba... shut up
