Password changed overnight?
Last night after a lengthy session of FFXI I log out and go to bed. FFXI is still running at the main menu.
This morning I attempt to play, but after I select a character it gives me an error telling me my password has been changed and to restart the playonline viewer.

I can't log back into the viewer because my password is incorrect.

What happened, and what can I do about it?

*support is closed, and will be until the late evening in my timezone.

Re: Password changed overnight?
Sounds like with you leaving it on over night and your computer protection not being very good that someone has hacked you.

Re: Password changed overnight?
Yes, so what can I do about it? I'm not very savvy with this sort of thing.

Re: Password changed overnight?
If your password was eight characters or less, read this.

Re: Password changed overnight?
I saw that. The problem is that I can't log into the playonline viewer to change my password to 8 characters. My password is 4, but I have no way of setting it to 8.

The official site reads that in order to change it you must be able to log into playonline.

Re: Password changed overnight?
bbq: that's pretty much entirely unrelated

Wiseman, this seems like a glitch in the POL viewer, like it thinks you set a password, and then tried to confirm it, it's looking for the new password. If you had been hacked, it should have logged you out of POL and FFXI, not told you your password had been reset.

I'd try calling SE support and see if they'll help.

Re: Password changed overnight?
Well I can only hope that I haven't been hacked. I have a second account that I've never even used (no characters >.>) and I'm in the viewer on that account right now making a GM call but I don't seem to be moving in the cue.

account support doesn't open for a long while. I'm hoping I can get a resolution before I go to work so I'm not in a bad mood all day but you know... I doubt that. ><

Re: Password changed overnight?
I wouldn't count on being able to use a POL GM to solve this. And be patient, for some reason even though POL GMs are very useless, they're also very busy.

look on the bright side: chances are good that nobody is ripping off your characters.

Re: Password changed overnight?
Well you were right about the GM. They were completely unable to assist me in any way whatsoever. I'll just have to wait another 7 or so hours for the actual support people.

Thanks for the responses everyone... I really hope this works out. I don't think I'd bounce back from having my character stripped of all his stuff.

Re: Password changed overnight?
well, again, look on the bright side. Chances are, if it has been hacked, you'll never get it back anyway.

Re: Password changed overnight?
I have been in cue on the live chat to speak to CSR for about two and a half hours.
Along with the normal 'be with you in a moment' messages, they are spamming the following:
An agent will be with you in a moment. Thank you for your patience.
We have upgraded password security for all PlayOnline services, and reset the passwords of those who did not meet our new requirements. An email notification was sent to your personal email if you have been impacted by this.

This gives me hope of course, being that I fall into this category.

Unfortunately, the I have no idea what email address I've used on file with SE. When I started my account years ago I had a different email which I don't even have access to anymore. In fact I've gone through several email addresses in the last couple of years, all of which are no longer accessible.

However, if I could figure out which one I used at the time I may find a way to access it.

Does anyone have a clue as to how I can find out the email address I have on file with them?

I've been waiting for a CSR for so long I'm beginning to wonder if I've been placed in a void.

Yeah at this point your best bet is to speak to a live CSR on the phone. I believe they'll be able to tell you which email address is on file once you prove who you are (i.e. verify the billing information on the account).
