| Drama Queen Bronze Ribbon of Service | FFXI "Corrupt Registry Entries"
My old PC recently went through some trouble, which ultimately ended up with it becoming broken and unusable. In the meantime, I removed my HDD from it, and installed it in another computer as a slave drive ( G: ). Previously, my FFXI was installed in the default directory on ( C: ). Whenever I run FFXI on this PC, I get an error saying: "Cannot open registry key for install path of PlayOnline-compatible software. ID=1000" Is there any way for me to be able to play FFXI on this PC, without changing any hardware around, but by messing with registry settings or the like? I don't want to screw anything up further, and would like some professional help. Also, I'm not sure if I might've posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry if I did. Thanks to anyone who helps in advance. |

Reinstall and let it update. More correctly, install FFXI on your new system.

That's a good idea, but I want to avoid it if possible. What I am thinking in my mind right now, is that there is likely a couple of registry files somewhere I can edit, to make it work properly, though it's possible that this isn't true. For some reason, FFXI is the only game that has done this (others, like WoW, Battlefield 2, etc work great)-- I'm guessing it's because it is very outdated software. |

You can't avoid it. Think about the error for a moment: Quote:
That anything else works at all is a miracle, if you genuinely wanted system stability you'd reinstall everything you're using from the old system drive. | |

Edit: I misread his stuff. Quick way, install POL again, copy over the folder, and then when you launch PoL hit "check files" this will add the registry keys in it.

Will still take forever though, and as Mhurron said, its a damn miracle everything else runs at all. Reinstall, save yourself a headache in the long run. Or at leasr reinstall the apps/games you intend to use.

I don't see why he doesn't just rename the hard drives. That sounds like it'd solve the problem without any mucking around in installations. I have my old hard drive slaved to a new computer and I didn't even have to do that, I just had to set up a shortcut system. All my programs and everything that WERE on my desktop I just opened up in a desktop folder in the program files and drag-and-dropped to my current desktop with the create shortcut function. Presto! The other thing I was thinking of doing was creating a second login from the slave drive, on the theory that if I created a new login name and id from the slave drive's OS, when I logged into it from the main drive I would bypass it entirely and be accessing the slave as though it were the main hard drive. But the shortcut method worked like a charm and was far more convenient, so I didn't play around with login ID's

I've had a similar problem, for some reason my desktop computer's disk drive is broken and i can't use any disks, i used an external hard drive and downloaded FFXI and it's expansion packs on there, using ym laptop. After installing them, i moved the HDD back to my desktop, my other games worked perfectly, but FFXI's PoL would not open, and kept getting several error messages. So basically the PoL recognizes one system and one system only, meaning removing an HDD and moving it to another computer, would mean reinstalling it on that computer so the system recognizes that App, i'm pretty sure that's it in a nutshell. |
