360 FFXI Installation problem, please help!

I believe this is the right place for this, so here goes.

I got FFXI about a week ago and I just now got the chance to install it. I get it in and managed playonline quickly, but what happens when I go to install the actuall FFXI installs for a few minutes, about fifteen I'd say because when it gets to 45 minutes remaining it just won't budge, I restarted it once. Is this normal, or should I be worried? Anyways to fix this? Thanks for the help in advance! Oh, and I am on the 360.

How long did you let it sit before restarting your 360?

Re: 360 FFXI Installation problem, please help!

I had this problem a few times, but mine would get to about 75% before stopping on me.

My problem was that there was a smudge on the disc that I hadn't noticed. Make sure the disk is clean and scratch free before trying to install.

Other things to check is that your xbox isn't set to auto-disconnect or auto-turn off after a period of inactivity. If I recall correctly the initial installation took about an hour, then the updates were several hours after that. If your xbox shuts off in the middle thats a lot of wasted time rechecking files before it will resume downloading.

Also may want to get a DVD player cleaning disc to put in the xbox and clean off the laser before trying to install it again, I got one from walmart for about nine bucks I believe that I use every couple of weeks.

Hope that solves your troubles.

Re: 360 FFXI Installation problem, please help!

It was about an hour(I never restarted the 360 though, just the installation), when I looked again(Just after posting) it said an error had occured. My disc is as clean as can be, it was new when I bought it and it looked new when I put it in.

EDIT:: I know this is probably a stupid question, but does the system need to be plugged into the internet and everything while the installation is in progress?

The installation itself, I don't think it needs to be plugged in. Stupid, simple things are always worth a shot for troubleshooting though.

I agree with cleaning the 360 with a cleaning DVD, and it wouldn't hurt to take a closer look at the disc just to be sure.

Have you had any other problems with your 360?

I wouldn't think so for the initial installation, but I can't confirm nor deny that. You'll need to of course be connected for the setup and updates afterwards. I would recommend go ahead and try installing with it connected to the internet.

What was the error that it gave you? You may be able to search for it on the forums or www.playonline.com under the support information to see if there is a solution to your problem.

Another problem I have noticed with the Xbox after many hours of game play on it, is that the disc doesn't always want to spin freely in the tray. Get some rubbing alchol and a Q-tip and clean the disc tray out if you notice any build up on there. Be sure to let it fully dry before pushing the tray back in though. I've actually had to purchase another copy of the game because the edges of the disc had worn down >.>;

I have mine setting vertically, and I know the PS2 read disc better in that position, but don't know if it has any effect on the 360. You could however try setting it on it's side if it isn't already and see if there is an effect.

EDIT: You may need to be logged into your xbox ID at the time as the game "attaches" itself to one ID on your hard drive. I'm not sure at what point it does this though. And I'm not sure if it requires being signed into xbox live at the time. The game only requires a silver membership (free) and not a gold, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I don't think you need to be logged in until you're creating an account. That's the point where it attaches to your XBox Live Gamertag. Before that it's just a big block o' crap on the hard drive.

Y'know, this game alone makes me want to trade my Premium XBox in for an Elite. Having 6 or 7GB free with nothing but FFXI on the HD is assinine.
