trouble updating?
Hi all!
I'm a return player, after a year and a half I've decided to come back to FFXI - lots of new games coming out, mainly FFXII, but FFXI drew me back and the Vana'diel Collection was a great deal!

Anyways, I've installed all the expansions and registered the IDs, etc. However, for the past three days, I simply cannot update the game! It times out on me every single time, forcing me to go through a 15-20 minute file check, then begins to download the new files. I have 2677 files left, and it simply won't work. My network settings are fine, I can play other online games, and my 360 connects to live flawlessly.

Has anyone experienced problems with FFXI in the past few days? I'm located in China, however my permanent address is in the US, which is what my account has been registered in. I know a lot of Chinese players are farmers, but don't worry, I'm simply an American stuck over here trying to play FFXI!

Square hasn't returned any of my emails to their customer support, so I'm beginning to get worried, as I won't be able to play the game!

If anyone else has experienced these kinds of problems, could you kindly offer some advice? Thanks!

Tim

Re: trouble updating?
Are you using Windower?

Always use POL to update the game.

Apart from that, no clue I'm afraid. Maybe try reinstalling?

Re: trouble updating?
Hi there,
What's windower? I'm only using Play Online to update, it just seems like the network is always timing out. The install was fine, Play Online works great otherwise, it's simply really, really slow.

/sigh

Re: trouble updating?
can't say i've noticed any problems with updating (just updated POL last night). might be a case of network congestion; have you tried updating at different times of the day?

Re: trouble updating?
well, since I'm located in China I've always tried using it in the afternoon here, which would be in the middle of the night in the US. I've also tried it in the evenings here, which would be morning in the US. However, it's still timing out all the time, yet I can surf the net without any problems.

Do you think a fresh reinstall would do the trick perhaps? I'm at wit's end here.

Re: trouble updating?
Haven't a clue what might be wrong. Have you tried contacting PlayOnline Support via telephone? It could be a Xbox360-specific problem; I've never heard of anyone getting hung up in quite that way on either the PS2 or PC versions.

Re: trouble updating?
Oh no, I'm using the PC version.
I just uninstalled then reinstalled again - - trying to update the playonline viewer at the moment, and it's dead slow as usual.
I'm beginning to think that SE might be filtering IPS from China in order to avoid some of the DoS attacks that have originated from here in the past...
I have every other unnecessary process shut off on my PC, but no change so far, and they won't respond to my emails in a timely fashion....

keep getting POL-1160 error message...

Re: trouble updating?
Well, after another day nothing has changed. I turned off my firewalls andn antivirus programs, I stopped using my router, and managed to update the Playonline Viewer, but no luck with FFXI as of yet.

I'm really not sure what else to do? It's hard to make international phone calls to a toll number in the US from here (in terms of cost) I just wish they would offer better support...

Re: trouble updating?
SE also offers live chat as an alternative to calling their toll number, operating during the same hours as their telephone service.

My suggestion would have been 'turn off the firewall and try bypassing the router', but I can see you've already tried that.

Re: trouble updating?
I think I know what you are going through moribund112.

Recently, I came back to FFXI after a few months of "off-time." I installed everything without a problem, updated POL just fine, then on with the downloading part for the game.

Heres the thing though: after a certain .dat file (specifically 114) my download just stops. There's no POL-error, the PC doesn't freeze, the application doesn't freeze (because the background clock is still moving), the download just stops at 44% of 114.dat.

I have installed and played FFXI on this computer before and it ran just fine. I just need to figure out why it won't download the rest of it.
