Yeah, once you have a HDD the network info is saved to it instead of the cards. If the PS2 had no connection info it would force you to do that first before doing anything online.

Re: DHCP server
Sometimes ISPs require a host name in the DHCP request as extra authentication. Since your PC works, I'm betting this is the issue. (note: I'm a notoriously bad gambler)

What you can try to do is supply the DHCP hostname your ISP give your PC in your PS2 network adapter configuration.

To find out what your DHCP hostname is on your PC, open up a command prompt and type:
C:\> ipconfig
Write down your IP address. It will be four numbers seperated by periods. Something like 172.16.128.4.
Next, type the following command:
C:\> nslookup nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
Where "nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn" is your ip address that you took note of above. In this example the command would have been: nslookup 172.16.128.4
The nslookup command, in turn, will return what your ISP dhcp hostname is. It will probably be 3 strings of text seperated by periods. Something like: dsl-8-128-16-172.flakeyisp.com.
That first string of text, everything before the first period, is your DHCP host name. Write it down.
(note: all those directions assume Windows 2000 or later)

The PS2 adapter supports the entry of a dhcp hostname in the automatic setting dialog -- copy your pc hostname there.

Cross your fingers and hope that it works.

If this does fix your situation, the solution to avoid this problem is to obtain a good consumer router, and then have the router deal with the issue. Routers can be configured to easily handle the extra information needed to get a DHCP address for you. On the inside of your network, you can either set up static IP addresses, or use a sane DHCP configuration.

I assume that since you haven't posted for almost two days, that you got it working? Mind posting your fix? Should someone else run into a similar problem, it'd be good information to have handy.

Re: DHCP server
I'd break down and do a 3 way call with PlayOnline Tech support and your ISP...

I think maybe we need to get a bunch of people together and meet him on Ventrillo or team speak and maybe walk him thru it.

it'd be a good challenge for anyones tech and communication skills

A Big headache too >.<

You sure you tried your ISP? They'd be the only ones that can wipe out a MAC Address recorded to your account. If your PCs MAC Address is recorded then only your PC would work unless you have a router configured to work around.

ISP = Internet Service Provider

That should be who is providing you connectivity to the Internet. With you it looks like it's AOL.

No number, MAC Address is a manufacturer created number it uniquely identifies your system. People that know how to read those MAC Address could derive from it the PC Type and NIC Card Type (Who made it, which manufacturing plant it came from, and how many were made before this one).

Nothing you have to do unless you have a router to mask the MAC Address. Otherwise all you need to do is call up AOL for connection problem, one of the things the tech support should end up doing is wipe out any recorded MAC Addresses. Do be warned though if that is the problem you'll likely get a good lecture from the tech support guy if they have to keep wiping out the MAC Addresses. Which is why it's highly suggested that you put the systems behind a router, not only for security but this as well.
