Hi guys. I'm looking to buy a new graphic card, eyeing on a 7800GS AGP card. However, according to this article, there are some problems with FFXI and this series of cards. So I wonder, anyone using Nvidia 7800GS at the moment? Any noticable problems you found?

I just upgraded to a card with that chipset and I am also using AGP. I haven't been everywhere or tested everything since I got the card, but it appears to be working fine. Most of the issues with the new cards can be fixed by using older drivers if needed. I am having a sound related issue in one area, but I am 100% positive that it is not related to the video card.

Not related to your original question, but the 7800GS is an awesome card in general. My 3DMark03 score went from 1,897 to 12,997 just by upgrading my GPU.

FFXI does not rely heavily on the GPU. I'm sure that hasn't changed with recent patches or anything. It heavily taxes the CPU and, to a lesser degree, the memory.

That is a sweet piece of metal, and you'll see some enhancement comming from the fact that FFXI still is rendered on the DX8(9?) pipeline. FFXI just doesn't take full advantage of the GPU.

Other games should fly though.

I had hoped, since the xbox360 uses DNA or some Microsoft DirectX technologoy that we would see more improvements on the PC as they were developed... but alas, no.

game runs fine with that card, I upgraded to that from an FX5200, and I noticed one hell of an improvement. if you have a decent CPU, you probably will as well, I can run the game @ 1024x768 and 2048x2048 without a problem with a card, and my cpu is only a P4 @ 2.6 GHz, even with a program I run called F@H which takes more than half of my cpu at any time, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

This is good to hear. I also use a 5200FX, and I'm in the market for a new Vid Card. My PC is pretty ok for the most part, but I hate not being able to increase my background RES to a higher setting to make the most of the game's graphics.

I only and forever use nVidia.
I took my video card to my dad's work to plug it in test for errors w/e, and a guy my dad hires from time to time to fix the server (dad's good at hardware, not software, hehe) and stuff almost crapped himself when he saw my pig (card) ^^

it was funny, my bf and i watched him carefully makin' sure he didn't steal it o.o

As far as that card goes, SE just states they are problems regarding using it with specific drivers (81.98). I have a 6600 GT and tried using a newer driver (82.65). I had several problems like song slowdown and a few glitches when a Blu used a spell. I used driver cleaner and downgraded back to 77.72 and the game is much better. I don't want to dwngrade all the way to 66.93 because I notice some speed improvements with the 77.72 drivers that I haven't seen in previous drivers.

Long story short: You'll probably get better results if you don't use the latest drivers.

You'll be fine. Pretty much every nVidia card will run better than the most advanced ATi cards - kind of a shame really.

I have a 7800GS bought it not too long ago, plays on my system very well with 1.5GB of RAM 2.66ghz P4 HT, nothing too fancy but FFXI works 1600x1200 2048x2048 resolutions w/ weather and full shadows on just fine in 95% of the time. But what I do notice is with *every* driver that supports the 7800GS (i've tried at least 5 different ones now) using a Firaga, certain abilties like Boost, and Asuran Fists, and *all* bard songs that are AOE bring my beastly 7800GS down to it's knees, i drop to the ballpark of ~7FPS while those are cast. FFXI is a *very* large part of my life, and I hate having to config so the effects aren't seen just so i can keep playing FFXI w/o going insane.

I used to have an NVIDIA, then an ATI, while I whole-heartedly agree that NVIDIA whoops ATI hardware wise they do, but ATI knows how to make drivers that *work*. I find it pathetically sad taht NVIDIA after over 2yrs of this (i had the *same* problem when FFXI first came out on my old NVIDIA card until i downgraded on it, which said downgraded drivers don't support the 7800GS) they still haven't learned how to fix it. I tried the beta drivers, I tried the new drivers, nothing works, the 77.72 drivers don't support the GS, only the GT apparently. If anybody is willing to help I'd be greatly appreciative, and most other 7800GS owners I'm sure will be as well.

I feel your pain, but I don't think there's anything that can be done in this case. Except you can try submitting a tech/bug report to SE and Nvidia to remind them of these issues. I already bought ATI cards fo my next PC partially because those slowdowns are annoying (the other reason was to play Oblivion d: ).

I had that lag problem too, I stoped useing windower...and it stopped, game works fine now :p I also use a GeForce 7800 GS
