Exactly, way to go. How do you like Vista so far? I'd find it hardpressed to go back.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

It's pretty... i dont like how everything has to ask you for authorization and i dont like how hard it works the cpu and etc. i have an old box (athlon 2100+, 1gig ram, ati x700) and its always writing to hd often and cpu utilization is always hopping around.

the resource monitor tool under task manager is very nice. i cant wait till they release their next server line. that tool would be very very handy. ill need to look into why my computer seems so busy always. its a fresh install with only ffxi on it and a few other small apps (itunes, IM).

all in all its nice. i just need more time to get used to it and play around with all the features. how does everyone else like it?

someone needs to write a vanadiel timer gadget!!!!

Thats the only issue I have with MS stuff, all these "new" features they brag about are already present in other systems...they just ported it to work with Windows and then claim it as their own!

Be the first to make it and be the hero. =D But I agree, the authorization is annoying, but you can turn it off (User Access Control)... or so they say. Admittingly, however; I like the fact that it will change things at work... like not being able to access your email on your admin account (viruses and such).

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Okay so from what I understand, FFXI + Vista works fine right? No running slow, no lagging in dynamis/sky/besige..etc.

In order to get it to run all I have to do is update from my Windows XP MCE to Vista and it should run fine as long as I turn off that UAC thing, right?

Correct... it works just fine. I've done as we said on the forum on two different PC's and it works well. An upgrade from XP to Vista should work, although I didn't upgrade but installed Vista from scratch. I went to an XP machine, copied the playonline folder to my Vista machine, did a right click on the pol.exe, went to properties and changed the compatibility to XPsp2 and clicked the checkbox dubbed, "Run as Administrator." And it worked, I didn't have to turn off UAC, although it is a tad annoying.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

I've noticed that if you are running windows AERO, it seems to be more taxing on your cpu and graphics card. I run at 1280 x 768 and I get a bit more chop now than when I used to.

Being able to see mini windows as you roll over tabs is pretty cool but hurts my performance a bit. :\

My box is too old...

Fortunately my pc is good to go... although my girlfriend just bought me a 30" Apple Cinema Display... yes, girlfriend, but I can't run Vista in high res since my video card doesn't have dual-link DVI... so the best I can go is 1280x800 which doesn't make Vista look very pretty. So I just ordered the nVidia 8800GTX video card which arrives today. Bad news is, there are no Vista drivers for it and my Creativelabs soundcard drivers expires tomorrow. Back to XP until those two things are released... which doesn't apprear to happen until around Retail launch.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Ouch that's a bummer.

Yea, I built this box about 4 years ago and at the time it was a little beast. It still can keep up fine but it's definitely not the same. I've been thinking about buliding a new system to last me another 4-5 years but I have other needs for my cash flow these days.

lolxp2100+, 1 gb ram, ati x700 256mb. it runs fine in xp, great performance and little chop. except well in dynamis when shit hits the fan.

but anyways... wow....30in apple cinema display?? goodness...

marry her.

Exclamation Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

ive almost got this working... i went to my XP PC and installed/copied from that PC to my POL folder and overwrote everything... ran in XP/SP2 compatability and checked "run as administrator"...

the Playonline screen came up then a second later i get an error message stating the following:

"PlayOnline Viewer installation cannot write to specified destination folder.
Please check your access privledges"

the awkward thing is... i checked all my access privledges and everything should be alright....

any suggestions or anyone else have any ideas?

When you can get a hold of a good DX10 compatible video card, Aero might be less of a hog.

In general it might be better to hold off using Vista as a gaming system until there are some good DX10 cards to choose from. Vista is supposed to be able to unload Aero to improve performance of games that use the whole screen but I have a sneaking suspicion it requires some DX10 support in the hardware.
