Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Okay, can anyone confirm that FFXI will run fine if I just upgrade instead of fresh install on build 5600 RC1? Not being able to play FFXI is my only hold-back from installing Vista. As far as my comp, I know she can handle it

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Some people say it can but I couldn't.

What I did was Install XP, Install Vista, Install FFXI. Nothing I tried could get it to work, in the end I went back to XP. Vista was nice, but with no FF it just wasn't worth it.

There are ways to make it work, I've seen screenshots of it running on Vista. Maybe if FFXI was installed before Vista but I tried copying over an old install and had no luck there. If you find anything out it would be interesting to know.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

How about build 5728, the newest test build after RC1. Has anyone tried that yet? I don't want to download it for nothing but they are cutting off the download soon.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Hmm Im thinking of going to Vista Beta 2 (not sure what build)(fresh install) but it seems people are having mixed results....

I really wanna use Vista (my pc can handle it) and I dont mind it not being full screen, I just dont want to RE-reinstall my system as I already lost a day doing that, dont wanna lose any more days unless I am pretty sure it works.

Sooooo, how many people have it working on Vista Beta 2 and how many cant get it working?

fyi, you are going to have to reinstall anyway when the beta for vista expires

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Yes but that wont be for a while yet I presume?

On the other hand, I might try Windows XP 64-bit. My whole concensus for this is I have just bought a load of 64bit capable hardware and I feel like Im holding myself back in performance by having 32bit OS...

But sod it. Instead of asking for other people's experience and getting mixed results, I am just going to dual boot a 64bit install of XP at the weekend and shove POL on that to see if it works. Then I can concentrate on other benchmark tests I need to do for other software I use, just to determine if the performance increase warrants the effort of reinstalling all over again...!

If you have to ask about it, a 64bit OS won't do you any good.

typical mistake. you are not.

firstly, 64 bit refers to the memory addressing ability of the OS. unless you have 4Gigs of RAM or more, 32 bit is more than sufficient.

second, unless an application is written to take advantage of a 64 bit architecture, you'll notice squat of a difference.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

I just wanted to say... once and for all... that FFXI DOES work on Windows Vista RC2. Previous post was correct, you need to disable User Account Protection ... completely.

I did however, have to run playonline from the shortcut that was saved from my xp program files. Once this was done, and FFXI was completely installed in vista... you're done. If you get a POL-1168 error when launching playonline... just hit Retry and it should take you to your updates.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

I got my hands on a retail vista disc from work that was released from msdn. Has anyone installed on the final version? I have it installed but pol isnt working.
I'm currently running windows vista business on my desktop at home.
I havent had the time to tinker with it but wanted to know if anyone has any experiences with ffxi + final windows vista? (i'd imagine it be very similar to rc2 but i wasnt able to tinker with any of the release clients so i wouldnt be aware of any differences/changes there may be.)

Yes, I did get it to finally work on my PC at home. You have to update POL using an XP machine, then copy it to your Vista PC. Then you have to go to the properties of the executable of POL and find the checkbox that says to "Run as Administrator". Once that's done, you should be good to go. It took me some time to figure out, but it does work.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Yea, thats what I did last night. I got it to work.

I ran install on my machine: pol + ffxi
pol would spit back a 'cannot run on this os' error message
I set the compatibilty of pol to run on winxp sp2 compatibilty and have it run as admin also.
pol would start but would crash
copied over the pol folder from my laptop
pol would run but say that files are messed up
click forward until it checks your files for pol and it will probably update some things.
after this, it was good to go.
