Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

I just installed a fresh copy of vista 5536 and FFXI WILL NOT RUN. Playonline says "POL Can not run under current operating system".

If anyone has any luck, let me know. I really don't want to go back to XP.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

when i ran FFXI on vista FFXI was already on computer and i just upgraded i didn't do a fresh install. i got "may not work" warnings but i just ingored them and it worked fine. there "will work" "may or may not work" "will not work" the programs under "may or may not work" seem to work best if u just use the upgrade version FFXI is under the "may or may not work" part

Yeah I did a fresh install, but POL won't open AT ALL. I'd be able to work with it if it opened a little and then crashed, but it stops before opening at all. I'd think that an upgrade would do the same thing since the .exe is the one crashing

Computer: Dual Core Duo 2.0Ghz
256 meg graphics card / 2 gigs ram / SATA harddrive I'm not worried on the hardware

The build is 5536 pre-RC1. It installs POL like normal (autorun works fine when I pop the disk in). It puts POL on my desktop. When I click POL it gives me the "known issues" image seen at the top of this page of the thread... I click "run anyway" and it says "Can not run under this o.s.".

I tried disabling aero and such, also running in winXP compatibility mode. Same error...

Ahh 5384 I had installed as well. It felt very "rough" to me still. 5536 is "pre-RC1" and so far to me feels ALMOST like a final build...

It'll be one of the last builds they do, so feeling "polished" is a good thing.

If you update, let me know if you! I really need my FFXI on my laptop! :/

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Has anyone managed to get FFXI working on Vista RC1?

Using the file from a CD install I get the same messages as Sleibhin.

I have tried using different compatability modes, running it as Administrator or anything like that.

Does anyone know a way to get it working again? I need my FF Fix but would prefer not to have to uninstall Vista again, it took long enough to get it working.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Well this seems to be POL specifically detecting Vista (maybe MS bumped the windows version in the RC1 build? e.g. from 5.2 to 5.3 or 6.0?).
If you open the property page for pol.exe, is there an option to run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode? All you probably have to do is prevent POL from detecting Vista...

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

I've already tried that, I set the compatability mode to Windows XP SP2, it didn't make any difference.

You can try Win 98 compatibility, although I'm not sure if it will be any better than what you already did.

I'm guessing there's major changes made to both the registry and .dll libraries and how a program calls to them. If such, then unfortunately, all of you with Vista need to either go back to XP, reinstall XP and then load Vista over it as an upgrade or just have a dual boot system (One for Vista and the other for XP)

98 Compatability, 2000 Compatability, XP Compatability, it just seems to know its lying.

When I use the compatability option on the POL config tool then check my system info it says I'm using XP or what ever I set the compatability to, it just doesn't work on the game itsself.

When I installed Vista I did it as an upgrade over XP but I installed Vista before POL, I might try installing FF first but I've tried copying the POL directory from an XP install over it and that didn't work so I don't think it will make any difference.

Looks like I might have to go back to XP.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

When I installed it under RC1(5600), It ran fine, here just said to copy a previously installed and updated PoL directory to where you installed it.

Do you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version?

Also, I installed from the DVDs, having to go into explorer and find the setup.exe's for each expansion, but it worked fine.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

It was the 32 bit version.

I've reformatted my computer again now and just installed XP. I might play with Vista again in the future if FFXI gets fixed for it properly.
