Jeez! I just checked the US amazon site and it's retailing at $263.99 for XP Professional SP2. The UK site is worse at £268.98 which is US$512ish. Wonder where the justification for pricing it twice as much for crossing the pond comes from?

XP Home OEM

This is just $84.99 you get the disk and a CD key, all you need.

Supposedly they're taking it off the shelf next month. At the local stores, the only versions of XP priced below one hundred dollars are simply updates. Probably could have gotten it cheaper if I shopped online, but I'm not about to complain. That economic stimulus check is coming in handy

Also, the price for Vista was surprisingly lower. May be something to do with people not wanting to make the switch to Vista, and those that have wanting to swap back to an easier to use OS.

I dunno, though. I just don't like change. It frightens and confuses me o.o

...

Only not really.

Hrmn you musta got a better stimulas check than i did .... i got got 3 different letters (one from my state congress, one from our national House of representatives, and one from the IRS all patting themselves in the back for giving me $27 back. !

Imho Id prefer they didnt spent $49 in wages, material & stamp to send me a $27 check!

That or ill call it even if they Settled for only half of the $76,000 in taxes they take from me each year.

I got three hundred bucks...dunno if that has to do with the whole not making more than ten thousand dollars a year thing, but eh. Whatevs, yo.

Time to go to bed, so I can wake up and work for my amazing paycheck tomorrow! Super serial, guys. xD

Somehow we've strayed from the topic of this thread.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

OK I got IME to work in Vista. Appearently you have to have the language bar on the screen, choose Japanese, and then you can minimize. And you have to use CTRL instead of ALT to swap between direct input and IME.

Anyone know how to get kaomojii to work? I imported the custom dictionary in the settings, and it works outside of FFXI but not in...

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Hmm... I just reformatted and reinstalled Vista on my computer. So far, I've got pol reinstalled and it works fine, and I installed the basic FF stuff and the Zilart expansion. Upon finishing install of Zilart, I get a message saying to mess with FFXI config tool to adjust things the way I prefer.

When I go to FFXI config, however, I get a message from Windows saying, "Final Fantasy XI Config has stopped working."

I've installed pol, the updated version for Vista, updated pol before I installed Final Fantasy... Do I need to install everything and update before I'm able to mess with FFXI config? That doesn't seem like I should have to do that, but I'm at a loss of what's going on.

I managed to get the config working ok before I did any updating, try going to start > all programs > PlayOnline > Final Fantasy XI > FFXI config, right click on it> Properties > Compatability and try it in XP compatability mode?

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

Yeah, I had tried that and it didn't work unfortunately, but the good news is that I installed just the first three discs, updated FF and now it works. <_<;;

I had talked actually to pol about my issue before that, and they had suggested I may have a corrupt install, but when I went into pol to check FF's files, pol wasn't even picking up that FF was installed. To which he tells me that he's never even heard of that problem before and I'm cursing how it seems I have to always be unique at the worst freakin' times...

But no worries, I think it's taken care of. I'm currently updating the rest of my discs and we shall see if I'm able to log in. =D

Heh, they have heard of it before because I contacted them like three times about it. Turns out half the problem was caused by an invalid PoL version (I'm in the UK but the version I was supplied with was for a US account meaning I couldn't access my account details and it wouldn't detect my FF install either). Could be a region conflict?

If you are confident with regedit try this:

Go to start and in the bottom box type in 'regedit' and hit enter. Next open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then find the SOFTWARE folder and open that and find the PlayOnlineXX folder (where XX is the region you are in, for me it's PlayOnlineEU) and open it.

Finally find entries 0003 and 0004, right click on each one and select Modify... and put a dot in the 'Decimal' radio button. Then enter either 1024 (the standard resolution), 1280 (essentially 2x AA for 640x640 textures), 1600 (the same for 800x800) or 2048 (can you guess what that is? ). Make sure you put the same entry into each box as the textures are square and odd sides can have funny effects.

I personally run mine with 1600x1600 res textures @ 1680x1050, bump mapping, no texture compression, mipmap distance set to 3 (via Mogtoolz) and medium shadows. Runs fine on a Radeon 3850 512mb card apart from in Jueno but I doubt anything will ever fix that.

Or you can google Mogtoolz and do it through that. I personally don't like Mogtoolz though because it has habit of not doing as I ask and applying it's own settings.

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

I've known a couple of people with this problem, was wondering if anyone here can help me, so here goes:

Every time when I minimize FFXI windower or put FFXi into the background (off clicking so to speak) my whole labtop would freeze for a good 10sec, then everything is running fine again. Once more if I bring FFXI back to main or click on FFXi it would lag for another 10sec. I've search for a way to fix this problem but those who had fixed it never answered me back (as if they never came back to the site).

If anyone can help, please help me out!! Thank you in advance.

P.S. Here are some labtop despc:
HP, with Vista Home Edition
Nvida Geforce 7150M/610M graphics card

Re: FFXI + Vista = Stress-Induced Aneurysm?

How did you people on laptops manage to get to the main menu within FFXI game itself on the vista? I can't seem to find any keystroke to access it to edit my hotkeys, bio, items, etc. I believe on desktop they key was * or - on they numpad. And trying to get out of 3rd person view is impossible as I cant hit the 5 key number to toggle.

Moving in 3rdf person with the mouse is a total nightmare.
