It has come to the attention of the FFXIOnline.com administration team that some users are using the Japanese version of the Windower program. Some users have reported that when they update their Anti-Virus software that it now flags a file used by the Japanese Windower (madCHook.dll) is a Trojan Horse.

This claim has not been verified, however it was reported to us, a solution is available in that you can go to the site of the original creator of madCHook.dll and use their version as a safe replacement to keep your system from flagging it as a Trojan.

The AFXrootkit trojan uses a third party library to achieve its stealthing. The 4382 DATs incorrectly identify a legitimate DLL (madCHook.dll 108,544 bytes) as trojan or variant AFXrootkit.dll.gen . This will be suppressed in the 4383 DAT release.

As a security precaution, you may wish to update your Anti-Virus software AND use the updated version of madCHook.dll for your applications. (Though we recommend you refrain from using the software to begin with. )

Sorry but I feel the same, I don't think this warrents front page news or even posting in the news section. Frankly, I don't think it warrants a thread at all. Windowers violate the TOS plain and simple, whether we like it or not.

This site hosts a section of forums that may or may not involve Windowers. They've always had, even before most of you registered here (Back when it was a resource site to help importers of FFXI)

Well I don't see a windower forum section in that link so I still don't see the need to make it a front page article especially in FFXI news. If we are not going to allow links about the windower because it violates the TOS, then why are we posting issues involved with it in the FFXI News section and on the front page?

ultimately i think it's a (tough) call for PiNG or Akosygin to make.

we all know the windower is out there. we can't stop people from using it but we don't like to encourage it. I don't believe this post encourages its use. we are just acknowledging it's existence and warning people about a (potential) problem.

I still see no need for it to be newsworthy. When there is a patch for the game and the English version Windower isn't working, we don't put it up as news and direct people where and how to fix it. To me its just encouraging people to use it, and though SE tends to look the other way, there is a possibility that people could get in trouble if caught using it.

Hello there, let me clarify a tiny bit.

Links are in the black area, discussion is in the grey area depending upon what you are discussing.

The notice was put up as a Trojan warning more than anything else. I thank you for your input on this and have taken appropriate actions to.... minimize the exposure.
