Really need help with inputting Japanese in game please.

Ok, I've installed the languages in windows xp, I can input romaji fine in Word and any other app and convert it to the appropriate characters in Japanese.

Example: Taunt = chouhatsu =?@’§”_

However when I try this in game I just get a load of question marks comming up. It allows me to press space to access the character selection menu, but again all of the selections are question marks also.

I'm thinking this is a problem with FFXI as it only occurs in game.

I'm running XP Home, and the standard shortcuts to change languages Alt + Shift to change language and Alt + Tilde to change input.

Obviously this problem isn't much fun for me as it completely denies me using Japanese in game.

Any help or insight anyone can provide would be greatly recieved.
