While going through FFXITool, I came across something odd. There are .dat files which contain all the dialogue and messages in any given region both in English and Japanese. They are separate files depending on language. Here is the interesting part, I don't have the NA version installed on my computer. FFXITool reads only the .dats installed. That means, the ability to read English text is already in the files!
Example:
Lower Jeuno JP text - abc.dat
Lower Jeuno EN text - 123.dat
The theory goes, if I rename 123.dat into abc.dat and replace the original, my client will read the info from the new abc.dat which has the same text except in English. The end result should be the ability to type in Japanese, yet still read everything in English. I'm sure there are plenty of importers (those that are still around) and people with various Japanese language knowledge who would want this. Estya@Ramuh 猫魔法少女 Tales of Tails LiveJournal

(I suspect they are) It would make it easier to create the batch file.

As you can see all the files are in a continuing incremental series... With the exception of E Athepa, the rest you can do a straight easy renaming 33>37, 34>38, 35>39 and so on. It's the odd ones you have to look out. I'll see what the other odds are. There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

My JP isn't great but it would be nice to at least have a basic dialog with them just to be sociable.
I am guessing that there are no "free" copies of the JP POL Client going (such as anonmymous FTP) as this is a breach of copyright? - Never Underestimate The Power Of A Duck!

Title - works, you can read your title and anyone else's on /check
Status - works, you can read any status on your top menu (Protect, Signet, Shock, etc)
Ability - partially works, English description of Passive+Active Abilities and Weapon Skills in top menu, but still Japanese in regular menus.
Important Item - crashes when accessing from menu
Mission - crashes when accessing from menu
Quest - assume will crash
Weapon, Armor, Item, Object - unverified, so far errors resulting in no description ingame. Future/possible tests:
-locate the .dat that contains English bitmaps of GUI (not sure if it exists on Jpn installation)
-obtain/compare .dats from NA installation and attempt Important Item, Mission, Quest, Weapon, Armor, Item, Object (this goes beyond renaming current available files)

I am very interested in the results of these findings.
My biggest concern with using the JP client however, is learning all the auto-translate phrases. Since they have a lot of kanji (which I don't know very well), I think communcation would become much more difficult for me on a JP Client.
Have you been able to locate any files that may have to do with the Auto-Translator, and possibly change files so that you get English Auto-Translate on a JP Client?
Edit- Also, could you provde links to FFXI Tool and perhaps explain where in it you can find the NPC Dialogs? I never was able to locate them with my version of FFXITool, so maybe a newer version has added this feature. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 04-05-2005, 08:17 AM | #14 (permalink) | | J...atatouille Super Moderator Join Date: Dec 2002 Posts: 8,404 Style: Light - Version 5 My Mood: Thanks: 5 Thanked 136x in 106 Posts Gil: 16,170 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 16,170 Donate | my first text file has a link to the FFXI tools. Faranim > so far, I haven't found any listing for Auto Translate phrases. Even if I do find them, I'm not sure if it would auto-translate English instead of Japanese. More digging and testing needed. To find the region dialogue/messages, in FFXI Tool go to the last Menu option "serifu" セリフ and do Serif Search セリフサー?. It will then scan your Rom folders and display the Eng/Jpn regions. Big Update!
Using Pebble's POLUtils I found some more English .dat files and more are translated. http://users.telenet.be/pebbles/index.html
