Why does ffxi run so dang bad?

Hello all, Whenever I try to play ffxi I always get between 10-15 fps, sometimes less, no matter where I am! why is is this? how can I fix it? My system speccs are:

AMD 1300+ mhz
512 MB ram
Radeon 9100 graphic card
Windows XP

Please Help, I would really like to play.

What kind of net connection do you have? If you are on dial up or your net speed is generally slow, then this could be your problem.

If net connection is not a problem, make sure you dont have multiple programs in the backround running while you try to play FFXI. The quickest way to do this is to look at your systray in the lower righthand side of the WinXP startbar. If that this has lots of icons, then that is bad. ^^ Shut them down and then run POL and FFXI. If its doesnt have alot of programs then check the program manager by hitting Alt+Ctrl+Delete once and see what is taking most of your processor time.

Also, it could be the drivers you are using for your video card. Make sure they are the most up to date type for your ATI~

also - turn off bump mapping and turn down res/texture res - 9100 isnt exactly top of the line and has slow memory.
