Error POL-1160/1161 - Final Fantasy XI :: Dreams in Vana'diel :: Community

I've been getting this message as I am trying to update my Playonline Viewer. The error switches between 1160 and 1161 (I can't tell why I get one or the other); both say it's connection might be busy, or check my cables.

My downloads are creeping along; most of the time each file'll have to be restarted several times before it downloads. I've only been able to get 34 of the 64 files needed ... and this is driving me nuts.

Asides from maybe the fact that I'm on a school campus and there might be router port issues, can anyone think of anything else that might cause the error? My web browser as of right now is going fast ... but this update certainly isn't.

Any help would be nice. As I've just got it and I have to get 1900+ files downloaded. I've looked everywhere and have tried lots of stuff, but nothing seems to help.

Are there any other people who've recently got the game and NOT had any problems downloading the patch? When I first got it, I installed it on my old computer with dial-up. It took 16 hours, but at least it worked. Just wondering if anyone else recently got the patch to work on a network so maybe there is something wrong with my settings... :mad: (even though I've DLed some of it and the POL update) :confused:

I swear I'm going to go insane. I've tried so much nonsense trying to get this to week for almost a week. I try getting the patch downloaded, but when it get's to the actual downloading I get POL-1161.
Today on playonline.com, they had a maintenence report that seemed related to this, but, even though they said it was alleviated, I'm still receiving this error.
PLEASE... any help would be hugely appreciated.

LOL the big patch did this to me....i just let it creep along and keep going over the lil one..then back to big one a few hundred files less >_< some times...it will only do like 3 files b4 u get the 1161 warning..but i am a ffxi addict..so i sat there aimlessly...=_=

it just did that normally for me....the first big 1 (1300 i think) it downloaded after a bigger yet faster to download patch... the patches since the first 1 u need to dl (first install it) havn't been so bad for me..i think i got that error 1 time -_-

With most Universities, their firewall and routing are setup to prohibit any incoming connections regardless of whether you have already established an other connection with them or not. Also, some universities may have blocked certain ports to prevent the use of file sharing programs.

Hence, there is a high possibility that your school's internet connection is blocking the functioning of FFXI. When the connection fails, check to see if there is a "global address" in additional to your private address.

What are global and private addresses? And how do they relate and what do they do, etc...? Could this be helpful in getting past the firewall?

I agree, but it seems like they've acknowledged the problem though... (On the playonline news page). I had a feeling it was their fault because before the recent patch and POL viewer update my friends could play over our university's network, so... hopefully it'll get fixed soon. I'm just wondering if I could get another free month since I haven't been able to play. But that's just being a little hopeful.:angel:

I just got that error today. The game was working fine the other day, and now when it needs to update, it gives me that error. I really want to get back on soon; I have a party that will be waiting for me later.

A while back someone mentioned that even though he/she kept receiving the POL-1161 or POL-1160 message, that person was still SLOWLY downloading it. Even if you turn off your computer, the DLed files will still be present. That was true for me too, unil I reached this big file. No matter how many times I tried it kept stopping at about 7-10 percent complete. The thing is, is that I would always give up after a few retries. Yesterday I was trying to download all day, because my friends ditched me. So I was just dancing around my room, eating Zours, and listening to H2bHC. It was like 5 am, when I went to check the progress it was like 50 percent. I thought, "Oh, it's just the initial info DL step..." Nope. I did a double take and saw that it was the big patch file.

So, the trick to get the bigger files is that you can't end your connection with POL. Just Keep on Tryin' (like the song). Hope this helps some and hope to see you all soon in Vana'diel.
