Problems with Viewer and FFXI (help?)
I'm really hoping someone can help with this, since there seems to be nothing in any help database on this problem.

First, my system is an Athlon 1400mhz, 1 gig ram, SBLive sound card, and I've tried two different graphics card, and both do the same thing: GeForce FX 5600 256M, and a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 128M.

The first problem is launching the PlatOnline Viewer. There are grainy lines in it, usually red or green lines. Everything is displayed as if it were a gradient background fill. Empty form fields tend to be filled with a grid of little red dots. The little chocobo cursor always has red and green digital fuzz around the edges. So it looks terrible.

Actually launching FFXI, or even the Benchmark program, everything is covered with red. Every texture has a layer of red on top of it, which flickers. The benchmarker makes it to about 150 on low rez, then freezes up. I can't imagine my system is this bad.

I am running DX9. As I said, I've tried two different graphics cards, and the results are identical. I have fully removed the drivers, and reinstalled, no good. I have tried running everything in the lowest screen resolution, and the lowest game resolution. I have reinstalled the game (twice now, and you know how long that takes), and still nothing.

I have posted some screenshots of the problems on my isp's webspace, here:

home.gwi.net/~chudd/ffxi/

The first 5 are of the PlayOnline view. The last is an in-game shot. The screenshot does not come out washed in deep red, like it appears when I'm in-game, but you can see that the character sprite is all garbled.

I'm hoping maybe someone else has run into this, or has some thoughts.

mine did soemthing similar to that before once I first got my graphics card. I really don't know what happened. I'd suggest uninstalling and einstalling the cards and drivers.

That has been done, with two different cards, actually. I've also turned off the fog emulation, after reading other threads here, and that didn't change anything.

The opening movie is also filled with green fuzzy lines around everything.

Still searching around for an answer.

This indicates a SEVERE configuration problem. (Or a piss poorly manufactured video card)

Please take a look at your VIDEO DRIVER SETTINGS. Make sure hardware acceleration is turned up all the way, or if it is up, turn it down one notch at a time to see if it works. Also, make sure that you have the latest video drivers and that it is set to allow it to use DirectX.

But if it REALLY is not the settings, you may want to check your motherboard and/or the video card connection. The benchmark failure is a very very bad indication. Try the video card at another computer with the same settings as your first to see if it is a bad motherboard if the video driver settings adjustments do not help.
