Could any of you read japanese when you first gor the game, or did you "learn" it by playing the game ???

The story you'd probably understand by whats going on and the menus and stuff like that you learn within a few hours of play just by messing around with them. Dialogues how ever you'd have to ask somebody if your part of a linkshell or just interpret it by context.

if you can read kana it makes it easier, even if you don't actually speak japanese. If it's in katakana, it's usually easy to guess what it is because it's a word borrowed from English, so me-ru is mail (in POL), aitemu is items, etc. The kanji is difficult, though. No furigana to help you...

xue is right, once you know the katagana, it would be easy to play the game. And if you are a chinese, it will be more easy because most of the kanji has the same meaning as chinese.
