Can my machine handle this?

I'm running Vista Home Premium with a nVidia 8600 GT I believe (Quad Core btw)

If it's any help I have an 8800 GT with a Q6600 quad core processor and I can run at 2048x2048 with all the bells and whistles on and still have 30FPS everywhere but towns.

I upped my stuff like 2 years ago and so far it hasn't conflicted with anything at all. My specs are kinda outdated, and I have it upped all the way and it runs fine.

Unless your computer is severely old, it'll probably be able to handle 2048x2048. Worse case scenario, if it does get choppy just lower the values a little and you'll find a happy medium...but I'm betting you're not going to have problems.

Gotta love DX8 and the crappy client, no matter how good your computer is you will still get a frame rate hit when you have many players on screen at the same time.

(Regardless of if you have the game set at 800x800 or 2048x2048)

Also apparently SE said in an interview in November that they were dropping DX9 because it would take "too much time", so they were focusing on improving the DX8 client instead. Which hasn't happened either, specially now that Nvidia went and fixed the problems they had with XI. So SE probably decided it wasn't worth it for them since people will still play the game anyway.

Also, what ever fix is in the 169.17 drivers is also in the .21 and later. 169.17 are old enough that you may have problems with other games with them so later drivers are a better bet.

If you're running a 6, 7 or 8 series GeForce and want the best FFXI experience, you can't run drivers older then 169.17.

This means the 6000 series, 7000 series, and 8000 series. Your card is a 8000 series.

I really, really don't like messing with my PC when I don't know what will happen for sure (I've had too many break downs in the past)

EDIT: Ugh gdi I can't find it. I'm looking in HKEY LOCAL but don't see a "Playonline US" or any crap...

stupid vista -. - I can't find the folder/files described in the OP (which is retarded because I can find Electronic Arts and my other game folders but NOT my Square Enix folder.

EDIT2: Specifically, these are the folders I see under "Software"

Classes, Clients, Conexant Systems, CXT, Hewlet-Packard, Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA Corporation, OBDC, Policies, Realtek, Registered Applications, Sonic, SRS Labs, Symantec, WholeSecurity, Wow6432Node, and Yahoo. >_>

EDIT 3: It was under 6432. ZOMG IS PRETTY!!!
