2560 and 1600, since you're almost certainly running a version of Windows that will let you just enter them in decimal to begin with.

Otherwise, Start > Accessories > Calculator; View > Scientific.

Okay, after reading the thread, I have figured out how to get my resolution.

what if your screens resolution is 1280x800? I used the 500 one, and it seems to look really good! But should I go like 460 or something just to make sure?

If it looks fine and your not having any problems, I would keep it the way it is. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

the PrtScn key on a keyboard will take SS and place them in the SS folder for FFXI, but honestly those SS suck bad, alot of PC users use a screen shot program, I myself use FRAPS

Which was really awesome and helped me understand background resolution (it's just the "real" resolution; not that complicated!), did confuse me in one respect.

It says, in regards to changing the background resolution via registry edits:

It is important to note, however, that the maximum value that can be used on either axis is 2048.

But the screenshots demonstrating the effects of increasing the background resolution on that same page clearly say that in one of them, the background resolution is 2560x2048. If the maximum on either axis is 2048, how did they get the X-axis to be rendered at 2560 pixels?

Likely the person who wrote that couldn't get it higher than 2048x2048, or copied that from another source, and no one's ever bothered to correct it. I'm pretty sure the actual maximum is determined by your specific hardware (i.e., maximum render size supported by your graphics card).

Check the packaging or documentation and/or the manufacturer's site, or just keep increasing the values in the registry until FFXI doesn't work.

I've never seen "maximum render size" listed on any specifications sheet for any video card. I've only seen what would be the equivalent of "maximum overlay graphics resolution" (in FFXI terms).

And I don't have FFXI right now, so I can't test it myself, but that seems like a roundabout way of trying to test this...

...Can anyone find any other source that explains any of this?

I remember seeing at one point a formula for how large of a resolution a video card could support, based on it's memory. I'm not sure how much of that was fact and how much was theory, though.

Really, if you can't find any info from the manufacturer, you're just going to have to do some trial and error. If you want to max it out, you'd probably be best off going with a video card with plenty of RAM, although I'm sure Mhurron will be along shortly to explain why I'm wrong and stupid and evil.

Everyone already knows.

Unless you have a really horrible video card that is starved for RAM, you have a higher chance of pushing the limits of the monitor you're using to areas where it' just painful to use.
