Which "that" did you try? Both of them? Are you running full-screen or windowed mode?

Or using windower?
What resolution are you trying to set?
If you set the background lower again, can you bring the overlay back up to that resolution?
Have you tried incrementally increasing the overlay resolution instead of going straight for maximum?
What's your hardware?

Using windower, however I've tried running in full-screen and SE's windowed mode.
For Overlay Resolution I tried increasing it in increments, I'd be satisfied if it would even stay at 1024x768, but higher would be better.
Set background lower, overlay still resets back

Well, I'm officially stumped, then. I was asking about windower because I know that sets the resolution itself, or at least has the option to; it's been too long since I used it to remember the details. But if you've tried without it, that's probably not it.

My only other thought is to double-check your decimal-to-hex conversion, if you didn't just use regedit's built-in thing for that. Which also shouldn't be a problem if you set it through FFXI Config.

I just picked up a 20" lcd with resolution 1680x1050 can someone give me the proper settings for that resolution? All my characters are squished when I try setting it up as 672 in 0003, and 41A in 0004 (tried reversing them too but no change)

It seems as if the changes do not take effect at all. But with my 17" the changes to it's native resolution worked like a charm.

Anyone that might ask this question again later.... if you select "Decimal" when editing the registry entry, you can actually type in the resolution number. Worked fine when I just setup my laptop to 1680x1050.

Read it all, btw, I got a AMD X2 running @ 2550 mhz + x800Pro @ x800XTPE (16p) 520/545 and 2 GB DDR memory. It still lags (I count lag as FPS under 24) in towns and party when running background @ 2048x2048.

Since the game is capped at 30fps, 24 is hardly lag. NTSC (your TV in North America or Japan) is 30fps and PAL (Europe) is 25fps so 24fps is hardly poor.

That kinda sounds like you're running a search for it and getting an error. You wouldn't happen to be looking for a directory on the hard drive, would you? 'Cause this is all about registry editing. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE should be visible as soon as you run regedit.
