Don't take it for granted but if you are standing 40 cm away from a screen, the human eye will notice any difference up to 270 dpi.
To give you an idea, on a 19' screen, at 1024 you would be at 71 dpi while at 1280 you would be at 89 dpi.
As you can see we are far from the limit. To reach it you would need to go up to 3840 in resolution.
But this is currently impossible on the standard computer screens. If have a good 19' screen, pixels are around 0,22 mm. Thus you have around 1660 pixels per line. Not even half of maximum human eye resolution.
I'm not sure what can be found now, but I have seen some 200+ dpi screen for sale for image processing stuff. Price can go up to 30.000 dollars tho.
Technical stuff apart, I think that currently, the best rendering with a reasonable price for the current PC games would be on a 19' screen at 0,22 pinch, resolution set to maximum, considering you have the hardware needed to keep all this at a decent FPS (another topic on human vision

...).
For FFXI, 17' would be still enough since you can only go up to 1280.
Edit : Just noticed, maybe you were in fact talking about what is called the "background resolution".This would be even more complicated since you would need to know how datas are proccessed when displayed on screen (since there is a difference between background and screen resolutions)
