For goodness sakes! This problem needs to be fixed!
I'm getting a litte annoyed at seeing the ERROR 4001 screen everytime I go to zone somewhere. I have read a large number of post on different sites & they have this problem too, but no one replies. I know this problem can be fixed... somehow. In just about every post people talk about "opening ports". Where in the world can that be done? I'm not educated in networking (only know how to hook 'em up) so I guess you could say I'm a dumb blonde in this field. I have tried to update the FirmWare for my router & the model number isn't available online & the one closest to the type doesn't have any updates available. I've messed with the QoS Tweaking, enabling packets, etc. I've reformatted my HDD. I've reinstalled FFXI many times. I've reinstalled my network card many times. I really don't know what else to do. Here are my specs, if anyone needs this info.

AMD Athlon XP 1700+ 1.43Ghz
512MB DDR PC2100
Radeon 9500
Soundblaster Audigy Gamer
40GB HDD (with tons of space + a slave drive "15GB")
ISP: Road Runner - Connected to a Linksys Cable Gateway Router

EDIT: I've tried to open these ports & I still get the SAME PROBLEM! What is the world is going on here!?!?!

Post here if you having this problem. Post here if you HAD this problem & tell us how you fix your problem. Please, this problem is very very annoying when you have a party of friends playing with you that DON'T have this problem. I have contact tech support TWICE & haven't heard anything, just got the silly auto reply.

I am getting this error also. It never happens while I'm playing the game, only when I'm about to start. It says downloading data, if I don't start playing within a few seconds I know that it will sit there for 5 minutes then come up with that error.

It happens most of the time I want to play, like right now, and it is very aggrevating.

Do you have a Linksys Cable Gateway Router? Basically your Cable Modem/Router built into one device. This router has a problem with FFXI Online for some reason. I know other people who have this router with this problem.

My advice, if you're antsy & wanna play, is to buy a separate router & cable modem. My parents have a Linksys Router (Model: BEFSR41) & a Toshiba Cable Modem. I know FFXI works with this setup because my computer was there with FFXI install & running, so that's what I'm going to buy. :spin: :spin: :spin:

Nope, I don't have one of those.

I think I may have found what my problem was. I get internet though another computer on a LAN. The computer I was going through has a firewall, which I believe is blocking the game for some reason. I've turned the firewall off and so far I haven't had any problems, so I think that was what was causing it. I sure hope so, but I guess time will tell.

if you got a linksys, then list your pc's ip in the DMZ. this will put the pc outside of the firewall. but it sounds like you're getting the connection. so...the linksys might be bad...it happened to me so i got a d-link for $30.

I have a similar problem... I get the 4001 error EVERYTIME I try and change zones. I can enter and leave my mog house just fine, but any other time it goes to the "downloading data" screen I ALWAYS get the FFXI-4001 error code and have to select the character and log in again. It's highly irritating...

I have absolutely no idea how to correct the problem, but it's making travel and quests a real chore to go through. I'm sure my party doesn't like having to wait for me whenever we go into a different zone, too. (The only reason they actually wait is because I'm a white mage, I'm sure. =P)

Yeah, if you have a route setup make sure that the UDP and TCP ports that FFXI uses are open to that computer. Routers name the method in a lot of different way, the basic thing your looking for though is a screen that lets you select or enter in a range of ports and what that range pertains to (Some routers get more specific and want the IP address that this range of ports should be open too).

If you are using a proxy method like a single computer hooks up to the internet and the rest of the network accesses it threw the proxy computer. Then check for firewall program somewere in the firewalls setup should be an area were you can do the same for the routers.

The most common two names you'll probably see to do this will be either DMZ or Port Forwarding.

For the ports you should open the data is on square-enix's website.

Thank you all for your help, but do you know if by buying the different router/modem for your computer you actually fixed the problem? I don't want to spend all that money to keep getting the problem, so how long have you had your setup with no problems. Thank you.

If you have a linksys router, there should be a "PORT TRIGGERING" ability. Meaning, the moment you send a connection to one port, it will in succession open all the ports you listed to a certain server.

You want to set this port triggering to kick in the moment your computer connects to port 44232 or 44230. Once these ports are requested, have it open all the ports as spcified in the manual to the FFXI server. These two ports are the first two requested when connecting to POL.

See if that helps.

I have a Linksys router and Linksys cable modem at home and have no problems connecting from 3 different computers I've tried playing FFXI from. I didn't even have to forward any ports to any specific IP in my internal network.

I only have a problem at work when I try to connect through my work proxy during break time. I don't have any control over the proxy here and don't want to ask. I have heard of some sites that will proxy the game through them through my work proxy. Can someone list any sites like those? or suggest any other alternatives?

Thanks in advance.
