There is a blog system on these forums, but I think most people prefer to use photo sites. If you just want to do photos, something like flickr would probably be good; if you want to add text too, you could use Blogger. There are plenty of good ones out there, you can google 'ffxi blog' or the like to see what other people use. I have a friend who has a very nice blog that uses wordpress.
There are a lot of benefits to blogging; I sometimes wish I could go back and read what I did in my early days in FFXI and see photos. A blog site that lets you sort by date is a very simple way to do this. It also lets other people keep an eye on what you're doing, and get automatic updates via RSS and so on if they can't keep in touch; although that's probably not going to be too useful until you make more friends in FFXI.
