I quickly snapped a few screenshots. Any info about it is gladly welcome, as all she would tell me in response to my asking "What is the symbol next to your name?"

I was thinking maybe this is a mod, but in that case, you'd have to have the same mod in place to even see it.

And I agree with ban; we should put together a database of all the different symbols next to people's names. Or just take a screenshot of the linkshell icon selection screen. -patman

There were only about 100 different members of the media given all the nicest high level equipment to run around in while covering the end of FFXI NA Beta.
