Crafting in FFXI?

Is there any type of crafter job or skills that you can use to blacksmith weapons/armor for yourself? I've noticed there are different types of hides as well.... Maybe you can become a tanner of some sort?

ffxi has guilds but i can remember all of them but theres stuff like blacksmith goldsmith etc..

So I'm assuming to change your job to blacksmith (or whatever) you have to join the corresponding guild at the right level (30 normally correct?). Can you leave that guild and still stay as that job or must you forever be trapped in the guild?

i think you can go in any guild with any job

and at any level but its expencive to be in guild at the start :sweat:
