I'm trying to get my Dark magic skill up, if I get on say, my warrior and use BLM as SJ, will it skill up? I know there is a cap but my DRK magic is like 8 when it should be 100+

So will this work?

No. The Main Job is the only one that decides if you will get skillups. Since War does not have any Dark Magic Skill that will not work.

I recommend casting Bio any chance you get unless the party you are in would prefer Dia instead of Bio. Also, Sleep and Aspir are fairly cheap on the mp to cast as well. If you time it right you can sleep a mob and make them stop doing a nasty TP move like Bomb Toss.

Or, judging by your skill level, use Drain.

Get on Blm or Drk, whichever is higher, head to the place with the strongest mobs you can do this without being in danger, and just cast Bio & Drain over and over until you stop getting skillups.

It can take awhile, but the stronger the mobs you do this to, the faster the skillups come

You will only get skillups in skills that come from your main job. Go to this web page, and look up you main job at the chart at top. If a box for a given skill is empty, you can't level it with that main job.

Warrior gets no magic skills whatsoever, and therefore you can not skill up in any magic skills with a WAR main.

The only jobs that get Dark magic are BLM (A-), DRK (A-), RDM (E), and SCH (D/B+). You have to switch to one of those as your main job and find stuff to spam Bio on. If you have Aht Urghan access, a careful BLM/WHM (preferably at least level 22/11) can snipe Bio/Stone on enemies in Besieged, then spam Cure II spells for XP after Dark and Elemental magic skills are capped. I do this every time I level my /BLM now.

Oh god, I remember a drk that argued to the heavens that he could level up his blm skills on his drk/blm so why couldn't he level them up on his whm/blm. He kept telling me "my game is broken". *shoots herself*

Dia is pretty much always better so it's only OK to cast Bio when A) the party is using Dia II, or B) the mob is about to die.

Also, you should be using Drain. Even if your HP is full, it damages the mob (and barely gets any hate since you don't recover HP.) Aspir applicable mobs as well.

At 100 skill level he's around lvl 37, RDM or WHM should be using Dia II so Bio I won't do anything but give skillups.

If they're not, well, he has worse problems then just low Dark skill.

My BLM is 31, I had an anniversary band that i got a few months ago when I quit, so I used it and BLM 1-30 in one day, I was leveling so fast I couldnt cap my skills, Im not even close to capping elemental and focusing on that first.

Seriously though it's stupid easy to cap magic skills in a lv 8 battle.

Your best bet are Drain/Aspir as Bio is unhelpful in a party situation (unless Dia II is being cast in which case Bio I away) and if you are levelling on crabs, beetles or MP using mobs you can regain a bit of MP with Aspir.

Unfortunately, despite being Dark elementally-aligned Sleep is based on Enfeebling Magic skill.

Actually, pretty much everyone that says you can't get skill ups from a SJ that the main doesn't have natively is wrong.

Yes, I called everyone and Wiki wrong.

I've gained Enhancing skillups when casting Warp as BLU main (i.e. no native Enhancing Magic skill to speak of), and gained weapons skill ups when using those wooden great katana when subbing SAM. It is possible, but requires an inordinate amount of time, as the skill up rate seems to be incredibly low. So much so that it's simply more efficient to get on the job you're trying to skill up, and do so.

For those of the POIDH crowd, I know I have one buried around here somewhere. And if not, I can produce one (legitimately, of course).

Heh, one of the most effective methods for rapid skill ups I've seen in a while. Gotta love such tricks.
