Just Recieved a Brand New PS3! (A Question for PS2 Players)

Or so I thought.

I've been gaming for about the past five years on the same low-end PC that my mother bought me. I've been happy with it, but until now I've only been able to play console games through emulators (Nestopia, ZSNES, etc.).

I was excited to see a text on my phone from my mother:
"Got u a new ps3 haha luv u"

It's new all right. She found someone selling a new PS2 (old version) not once removed from the box. She bought it at a decent price (according to eBay), and I had to let her know that the "deal" she got on a PS3 wasn't exactly what she thought it was.

My question is this:
I REALLY want to play FFXI! I've always wanted to. Should I sell this on eBay and use the other moneys toward an Xbox 360 or PC? Do other PS2 players have problems keeping up with the graphics of a Xbox 360 or PC?

I searched for screenshots and what not, and I don't have a problem with the way it looks on PS2, but gameplay might make me think twice about removing the seal on this. I already know what character I want to be and what starting job I'll be taking thanks to your thread welcoming noobs.

If you left the PS2 in the box sealed you should be able to get a decent price for it. Used, meh. You'd probably get off slightly cheaper with a 360 unless you can salvage some stuff from the old pc (case, hd, floppy, etc.).

It's not that PS2 is a bad candidate for FFXI, but these days it has become increasingly harder for new players to get started on PS2. In order to play FFXI on PS2, you need the HDD attachment which has long since been discontinued by Sony. If you can somehow grab one of those, you just gotta buy the vanadiel collection '08 and you'll be set.

If acquiring and HDD is proving to be an impossible challenge, I'd recommend PC or Xbox360.

And I wouldn't pick up a HDD from Ebay either unless its from a reputable seller and is brand new and in a sealed box. I've heard a lot of horror stories about bad used hdd's. I won't even buy a used one anymore and I am a nutcase collector.

All righty, thank you all for your quick answers.

Purchasing an Xbox 360 and getting FFXI seems extremely easy! I did find a new sealed FFXI for PS2, so I'll investigate that further before popping this up on eBay. I also have never sold anything on eBay before, so I hope I get any bids whatsoever.

My decision is to try and go with PS2 if I can find a decently priced (NEW!) FFXI. Thank you.

Don't forget a network adapter and USB keyboard if you are going with using the PS2.

Not to hijack this thread ( :] ) BUT-- With the Xbox 360 version, would a USB keyboard be recommended? Or would the Text messaging thingamabob suffice? I've already ordered FFXI, just curious about how I'm going to communicate with everyone.

A USB keyboard is practically required; the WERTY keypad is a little too cumbersome in my opinion.

I love the little keypad that you pop on the controller but I only usually use it for farming or crafting. During ls events when there is a lot of communicating going on, I definately use the keyboard because the chatpad is just a bit too slow for my tastes.

Thanks for the input. :D I've also put in an order for the text messaging kit. I figure it'll have its uses, even if I don't use it as much for FFXI.

Does FFXI run on PS3?

I still have all my PS2 FFXI stuff, but if I return to the game I have no idea how I'm going to get WotG onto my HDD. My PS2 doesn't read disc any more.

ffxi does run on a ps3. Just go through th same install process. You will be asked to partition your HDD (takes about 10G and dedicates it to the "ps2 HDD").

Network adapters iirc are no longer sold either so you will need to ebay that as well if you plan to go with he ps2 route.
